Didn't see a thread for this one yet... cool flick! Liked the grit, and the fight scenes were pretty cool.

Ditto! I really enjoyed this one and must say as a martial arts instructor and choreographer, the flying knee off the table was awesome!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that last fight in particular was well shot and very realistic!

This is hands down the best fight choreography of any movie. I wasn't taken away by much of a story, but what was shot looked great.

Yes. Excellent fighting.

My Thoughts:
Excellent fighting until they opened their mouth. Acting just did not do it for me.
The bigger goon sitting down cracked me up.
The one chick leaving was definitely not in a hurrry to skiddatle was she?
LOCation, location, location. FRIGGIN VERy cool.
Lighting was really great. Although there was great natural light, I saw you had a few extras in there to enhance it.
The flash back was cool. The girl did a great job I think and the story of the two main character kinda meshed together. He's on a revenge path right? But, was that not the girl from the bar leaving? I'll have to watch again.
The guy in the black coat/hat.. I'm not sure what that was about on the flash back but his broken leg was cool.
Fighting.. again, superb.
Story was good and I liked the pure raw revenge.
Music.. Very fitting and worked well. I assume it was stock since there was a "music mixer" in the credits?
Sound FX. Needed a bit more work. There were quite a few holes here and there.
ADR... ummm.. Not sure about that. Just cheesy dialog imo.
I really liked the main character and the main boss's 'look'. I think they've got a great feel on camera. Great stunts. Just need work on the delivery.
Opening credits.. I really liked the transition of the title into the sign. Felt like i was going to sin city.
I loved the ninja Bartender.
The "married" thug was funny too.
I actually liked the end line. Good pure fun.

I enjoyed the action of the piece and it was great fun to just let go and have a good ride.

cheers on the submission.

Thanks so much :) The movie was deffinatly made for action.. Matthew really wanted to showcase his choreography in a film, and this was his chance ^_^

Ahh! So much to comment back to!!
The Acting.... yuh. Those guys were deffinatly fighters. Being the only girl involved I would have had better actors to enhance it, for sure.
He was indeed on a revenge path . Sorry if that confussed you, I ( the filmmmakers wife ) was the only female involved more less b/c I was avalible and up for wearing differant costumes, tried to make them as differant as I could ^_^ Sorry if that confussed anyone.
The hat/coat thing, his hat and coat were taken away and ... the flashback was to kinda show that his wife had given them to him.. thus the fight scene :)
The ADR... yuh. LOL yuh. It was rushed for sure and the main villain actually, we could never get ahold of him to finish up his adr.. i think it would have improved that scene if we could have gotten him over here to finish, for sure

Thanks for all the comments and critiques! I'll have him sign on and read everything later on :)

I wasn't able to completely follow the story line in this one, but the fight scenes were so well executed that I still enjoyed the viewing experience. Great, great mano-a-mano scenes. I love it that, with as few women as we have here on this board, some of us were involved in the most action-packed flicks... ;)

Hehe thanks for the comments.. The film was origianlly 14 minutes long... so we had to cut out awhole lot in a hurry and looking back there's deffiantly things that could have been left in and out to make more sense of it all but at least the guys got a serving of action ^_^ haha

thanks again!

I have to echo the compliments on the action scenes in the end. We did a short fight scene in our movie and it was hella hard just to do the stuff we did. I saw yours and I was just impressed throughout. The camerawork during the fight scene really stood out and it really seemed to heighten the speed of the action. Awesome job!

Oh yeah. Finally a thread. I was looking for this one before since it was the first one I watched. The fight scenes were kick a$$ dude. That flying knee kick was pimp. The cuts, the action, the lighting all flowed for this. The story was a little not so great but like MsManhattan said it was an engaging veiwing experience.

Hi Shaun! Thanks so much for the compliments! you mentioned you had an action scene as well, I will check that out asap because i don't recall watching yours yet. Our cameraman ( actually two of them ) are some really good friends of ours, who've been filming local action flicks for years so they amazing to have on board to come help us out :)

Thanks again!

Broken record time, but you can't ignore it, the fight scenes were great. A very realistic and solid fighting style and stances. Nothign Crouching Tiger fancy, it's practical and well executed moves. Flying knee - total eye candy!

I loved the bar at the beginning, I'm a huge sucker for the post-apocalyptic kinda feel.

Well done!

Thanks for the comment ^_^ Can't believe everyone liked that flying knee so much :O We thought people would enjoy the leg break more, odd :O.

Glad people liked the straight up gritty, real fight feeling it had too it ^_^

I like when the nunchuck guy is killed with the kick to the back of the head. Great whoosh and contact sounds too! How'd you do those? One thing I noticed though, is that the muzzle flash doesn't look like it's coming out of the barrel of the gun, looks more like its coming from the hammer. I've done muzzle flashes before, and I know sometimes putting them where they're supposed to be actually makes it look fake. What's your take on it?

RDragonFilms
06-07-2006, 07:25 PM
Thanks for the comment : )We looked back at the film, to see what you were talking about, the part that you saw, is where we used a blank gun and the flash you see is the actual flash that the gun produced, so no fx there. As for our take on it it sometimes looks fake.. yeah you just have to play with it really, and make sure the actors react well to the airsoft guns 'firing' and whatnot. Use lots of quick cuts :)

Thanks again ^_^

Matt! Damn it! Good fighting! All of the elements are there, but I think you didn't have enough time for the story. I kind of know where it is going, but I felt as if you had to cut to much of it for the fight. Which brings me to the fighting. Hell Yes! It is shot and edited in a way that I could just sit back and watch 15 or so minutes of it. It was in the same style as Ong-bak. I hate what compression does to action scenes.

Fun, cool, more story

loved he title reveal - very TRoma in a cool sort of way
nice locaion and loghting
cool mad max post apoclaypic bar set up
music woulda been nice after he shot the thugs ... a little bad ass music
nice CC in the falshback dream sequency thing
conversly things were a litte to soft in the final battle
I couldn't reallu follow the story but didn't care that much because it was cool anyway.

Great action sequences and action direction.
Believable, hard to achieve. -Kudos-
But not so much SuperHero eh?
I also thought the look your getting was of a high standard. Some of the shots were very interesting.
A simple story but really showcasing the stunt-talent. I look forward to what you get up to in the future.
Great job.

Jack,

thanks for your comments on the flick : ) I agree with you on the sound in the final battle, we couldn't get up with the villian to ADR his lines.. so we were kinda stuck doing what we could to submit it into for the Hero fest but, in the final product it will deffinatly be redone : )And thanks for the music info, i'll tell Matthew , maybe he'd like to add some in there

thanks again!

Hey matt

Glad you enjoied the fight scenes ( this is Nicole btw ) yea.. the film was deffinatly made to showcase his fight choreography. I would like to have seen more story... which was an issue I pressed during production.. but no one listens to me ;) Glad you could sit back and watch the fighting tho. Maybe we'll get together sometime and you can check out the 15 minute version.. more story that way ;)

The story can fit in there with ease. I know there is more there. There is no doubt of that. I want to show the 15 min. version at the next "Outdoor Cinema".

We's all fightin' and filmin' type folks. One of these days, we will all pull together and make the biggest, baddest, fightenest film this state has ever seen...oh with lots of blood, guns and weapons too.

Tell Matt to give me a call. I still have his head bashing cop club thingys.

I also was having some Ong Bak/muay thai flashbacks in there. Loved it! Watched it all the way thru, then started back at 2:24. Awesome! I also loved the ending. But I agree with a previous post about maybe sacrificing story for stunts...not saying it bothered me. :) This is just my initial reaction to the first 1.5 viewings. heh! Not a very technical review, but man! Loved the fight sequence!

I felt the Ong bak feel as well. I also felt that action was great but I didn't really like the white flashes though it seemed very amatuerish

I loved the fighting aspects. Since this was much of the "Acting" part I gave it a 9. I would have given it a 10 but right at the end when the bad guys hits the floor... just before he stretchs for the gun you can see him catching hims self (so he doesn't smash his face to the floor) What would have been perfect is to do the same type of camera moves like you did with the smashes and hits... a flash or something just before he hits the ground to cover that he his catching himself.... andl have a poof of dust in slow mo off the ground when he hits.

Really good action... loved the ending concept. Could have been a bit better with a slight jump edit flash to the shotgun instead of the slow pan.

Haven't read the other comments on this, but just got a chance to see it & wanted to leave mine while it's still fresh in my head.

At first I wasn't too impressed, and it wasn't until near the end that I really followed what was happening & then the beginning made more sense. Could just be me, since it's a pretty simple story.

When I finally got really impressed was when our hero jumps up onto the table, and then as he runs across it we dolly shot with him. NICE! Another cool shot was soon after when we do a FAST dolly back from our hero after he's entered the large warehouse room.

The sound came across generally muffled, and sometime perhaps just a SLIGHT bit out of sync. ADR seemed to need some work as well to really sell it.

Otherwise, huge props on the BEST action/fight sequences I've seen out of this fest yet. Not just that they were good for this fest, but they were good period. Some pro stuff, for which I'm really glad I got to see.

Note: I haven't read the other posts yet, so I may repeat comments that have already been made.

I liked the western feel to this one...I'm always a fan of a good western. However, I felt like story was pieced together around a really cool fight scene. Hands down the best fighting of the fest, not to mention some of the best fighting I've seen in a very long time. But it was really the corner stone of this project.

During the big fight at the end I felt the music was wrong. I am a fan of techno/house/dance music, but the pace didn't seem to be right for the fight. It felt out of sync with the fight. Actually something a little more frenetic would have fit better, in my very humble opinion.

I understood the "flashback" content, but didn't feel it was necessary...at least not to the length it went. And for sure the second flash back wasn't necessary. The first one at least lets us know why he is there, but the second felt like just a "reminder" even though we saw the first one less than a minute prior.

Want to help me choreograph and film my next fight sequence :) Great job there!!

Hi - nice job. Great lighting. The story didn't really capture my attention all to much, but the great fighting was redeeming. It's nice to see a realistic fight scene.

Liked the look and the locations. Audio was decent and of course the fight scenes were top notch. Not sure on the story but I shall watch it a few more times when I have time and perhaps I will latch onto it.

Cryogenic,

Thanks for the comment.. audio yea... We couldn't get together with our main villain, so it never got flushed out properlly and the story was cut from15 minutes to 6 so :( unfortunatly it may have not transtaled as well as we hoped.. thanks so much for commenting ^_^

Man, I really want to see this movie after reading all the feedback. Can I view it online anywhere? I looked through the herofest forums, particularly the viewing/voting thread, but I guess since it's over they took the films down (haven't been on the boards in a while)?

Hi ya, just wanted to let you know that it's actually not online anywhere, the film was cut from a 16 minutes version to a 5 to 6 minute mini version of itself. We will have the 16 minute version along with some goodie and a photo album on sale soon, for anyone intrested!
