I was reading the article on 3.5" LCD hoods, and thought, "that doesn't look so complicated..." A couple hours later I came up with this little guy:

Total cost to me was $0 because we had all the stuff lying around. And once it's off, it flattens down to stick in a pocket or wherever.

Stuff you'll need:
-pieces of thin wood (around 1/8th inch, even 1/16th would work)
-black cloth, about 1 foot by 2 feet
-strip of elastic
-some heavy staples
-sewing machine
To start, cut the wood, (i was able to do it with a ruler and utility knife) to the desired length. I don't remember exactly how big it is.

Sorry, but I don't have pictures of all the steps, so bear with me as I try to explain.
Take the cloth and fold it in half, it helps to iron it to make a crease, and sew stiches up from the crease making little pockets for each of the pieces of wood to go in. Stick those in so when it's folded up it'll make the hood.
On the side that will be the inside, cut the fabric sticking past the wood to about a half inch, and cut each pocket separate so you can tuck the flap inside over the wood.
On the side that will be the outside, cut the remainder to about 1 inch, and cut slots along the wood edge of the long sides for the elastic to stick through the fabric and in next to the wood.
It gets a little tricky folding it up and stapling it since both ends of elastic are attatched, but take the outside flap, fold it twice over onto the inside, and staple from the outside. I used a staple gun and then bent them over on the inside. The elastic strips should be stapled in along with the edge to attatch it all together.
To attatch the ends together completing the box, cut the flaps off the end, one to a half inch, one to 1 inch, fold them into each other and over, and staple them, like so:

And there you have it (if you didn't get lost in the instructions)
I wanted to stitch it instead of using staples, but didn't have a heavy duty sewing machine that would handle it.
