A virtual ground glass. Because the image on a video monitor or viewfinder is the whole recorded image the operator does not have the additional "outside" space to help with the framing of shots - such as framing out the boom, or pre-empting a character entering frame. The camera could create a virual outside space based on recording additional information when the camera moves and placing it around the edges.

The RED already lets the operator view the overscan so that you can use it just like you would an optical viewfinder.

Also the digital reconstruction idea would fail in practice because the point of the overscan area is to anticipate action. If your excess frame was generated from a point in time previous to the present, you can't anticipate when an actor is going to enter frame, the data wouldn't exist
