I was wondering if someone could lay down the workflow for me here. I know that vegas and premiere dont support the varicam. I also know that to "properly" edit the footage you would need a raid supporting 150 plus mbps. Heres a question- since the varicam and the hvx are both dvcpro hd, does that mean that i can import varicam footage using my copy of hd link? (itws how i currently edit hvx stuff).

also, is the varicam a 4:4:4 color space, in comparison to the hvx's 4:2:2, and is that why the mbps requirements are higher?

could i edt varicam footage on my macbook pro using fcp?

im a lost lost man... I just got a call from an old client who was like, "you can do varicam, right?" and I was like... Um let me call you back, I have something on the stove...

I was under the impression that they are are the same codec, but I could be wrong. You might get better luck posting this up the HVX technical forum.

You can edit Varicam footage on FCP, yes. It's the exact same format, same codec, same everything.

Only thing is, the VariCam doesn't have a firewire port, so you have to import the footage using an AJ-HD1200A deck.

what about on a pc? or rather- can I go through the same process bringing varicam footage onto my pc as i do with the hvx (once its on a hard drive). ie, hd link conversion into vegas or premiere...

thanks barry

If you want to edit in the native codec, you don't need HD Link or any of that. FCP supports it via firewire, and so does EDIUS Broadcast and Avid.

Vegas and Premiere don't.

For Premiere you'd need an Axio system if you want to edit in the native codec.

If you're bringing it in through HD-SDI then none of this applies, you can use any system that has an HD-SDI hardware board.

All I'm saying is, it can be a whole lot easier than that; FCP, Avid, and EDIUS all support native firewire editing so it's as easy to edit high-def DVCPRO-HD as it is to edit standard-def DV.
