View Full Version : Summer workouts/excercise anyone?

So, after this last term of not sleeping, eating really poorly, not excercising, and way to much caffeine, I decided that over my break I'm going to get my ass back in shape. I used to swim a bunch and I also played water polo for 4 years, so I think I'm going to start out with swimming. Probably 500-1000 meters to start out with, not super intense. Problem is, my break is only 3 weeks. Do you think this is even enough to make a dent in my unhealthy self? I'm not completely out of shape, I could probably set out and run a 2 or 3 (slow) miles without totally dying, but I'm deffinetly not in very good shape.

Does anyone else have any plans to get in shape this summer? Does anyone have any suggestions for kicking those poor eating habits/addictions? I just know that because of all this inactivity and poor diet, I feel like crap, and it's time to take a stand! Who's with me?

if i were you, the short time spand you are giving yourself i would do a fast. clean the engine first before you go on a road trip.

I was thinking about that, maybe doing the raw food thing or something? Or would you recommend something that's better/more effective? I already decided that fast or not, I'm cutting out all the red meat, and also alot of dairy and of course sugar. And thanks for the link Terry, I was looking at that thread a couple days ago, good info.

If you're thnking of it being a summer-only thing, you might as well not even bother.

No plan to get into shape is worth spit if you don't make it a lifetime commitment. If you can find an hour a day to do anything that isn't work or school-related, then you can find an hour a day to exercise. And what you eat is always under your control.

I don't plan on it being a one time summer only thing, I just plan on using this 3 weeks to help get me back into the swing of things after being out of it for a while, and I am trying to decide what the best approach to this would be so that I can be most successful in changing my lifestyle for the better in the future. I was an athlete all through high school, (varsity wrestling and water polo) and I was always in good shape, but since I started college it seems like the stress has overwhelmed me and I've wussed out and stopped excercising. I know I can find the time to excercise, I know it's there, it's just a matter of getting myself to a point where I won't be just starting to excercise when things get busy, that's why I want to start over the break. Anyhow, these are good suggestions guys, thanks.

The cleanse-the-system thing IS a great place to start. I wish that I could give a lesson on discipline, but I'm not that guy.

I just had to hire a person to come to my house three times a week for the next 5 months to get me in shape, so I'm with you. I have to have money on the line so that I will force the discipline hand. I'm also held accountable for what I eat and drink, which means less whiskey. :(

I do find that even writing my workout times on a large calendar (my wife just bought a 5' x 5' for the wall) and putting it in my line of sight helps keep me motivated, otherwise I just keeping on working on the computer.

Another silly thing is to make stupid notes for yourself and post them on your mirror and doors. It seems silly, but it works.

Good luck. Just know that I'm with you in the workout thing. :)

Thanks man...I've tried and failed several times in the past few months to start....but this is it, if I don't do it this time I'm truly letting myself down. Just have to slay these last few weeks of school before I'm home free swimming my ass off and riding my bike and maybe lifting a bit, and oh yeah, cleansing the system. I think the swimming thing will be key. I HATE running, but love swimming. I think it's just as good of a workout too, if not better. Hopefully I will win this time!

David's right...fitness is not a regimine or program...it's not a diet, either. It's a lifestyle change.

I've been up and down all my life...for a few months I'm a fitness machine, then I'm a wad of flab for a few months. Repeat cycle. Then I decided that I'm gonna have to make permanent changes...not really in what I eat or how I get exercise, but a change of mind.

Make like one change a week. Week one, eat slower. Week two, start drinking more water. Week 3, start some activities...and I'm not talking about packing yourself into a Gold's Gym. Just do something...go outside and play b-ball; take the dog for a walk; have sex...or if she's not in the mood, start a fight.:nads: :love4: Anything that gets you moving, and doesn't feel like 'work.' That's what works for me...not that I'm some kind of fitness guru. But, I've tried everything and a change of mind is the only thing that works. If you want to get in shape, make it a priority in your life...make a decision...the rest will follow.

have sex.... If only it were that easy....I see what you're saying. I deffinetly just need to orient my life toward more healthy living. I have to face the fact that I'm always going to be busy, I'm always going to feel like I "just don't have the time" to be healthy, but I just need to suck it up and just do it. I think I need to start by eating healthy. It seems like it's just so convenient to eat shitty food these days. Even when you go to the store and buy stuff, it's easy to eat shit. Plus I still live at home, so food of unhealthy sorts is in constant abundance. But, there I go trying to make excuses when it all comes down to me anyways. Time to take a stand I guess and stop bitching about why I haven't done it already.....

I 100% agree with The Jimerson Factor

Getting your 'ass in shape' is a lifestyle decision and not a miracle 3 week parlay.

Dude, you need to find a 24 hour fitness, that place changed my life. The biggest issue I always had was finding time to workout, now I do all my workouts at 11PM. First of all, there is barely anybody there, so I have free reighn to anything I want, and secondly it fits with your schedule, they are open 24hrs a day, God knows how many days a year, but I've never seen them closed.
that mixed with diet got rid of my marriage weight in just a couple of months, and the wife couldn't be happier, and when the wifes happy, your happy :)
It is a lifestyle change, you just need to get motivated, find a specific time to always work out, and then don't quit. working out for 3 weeks is just going to set you up for dissapointment, because if you do it right, you won't see results in 3 weeks, your just going to burn yourself out.

I have kept a pretty good fitness and eating schedule for the last 8 years. My knees are paying for it now... getting a stationary bike soon. Of course there have been ups and downs, but I don't think I took longer than 5 weeks off. Hero-Fest forced a 3 week break, and I'm dying right now. My biggest problem is not getting enough sleep (ah yes, and beer). My grandfather is my idol is this department. They guy has exercised and eaten well since I can remember. He just turned 80 and still bikes 5 miles every morning! That's often followed by a round of 18 holes! Madness I tell you.

About a year ago I decided to build a web site for a 12 week fitness challenge. In part to teach myself PHP and refine my HTML skills, but also because some family members had mentioned being interested in a such a contest among family and friends. I think the biggest contest had 10 challengers. Maybe we should try something like this among DVXusers?

As far as getting back into shape over the summer. Kimko said it:

THAT'S THE KEY! PUTTING ON THE SNEAKERS IS THE HARDEST PART.

I would break back in slow and set a goal of building an eating plan and a set of routines that will fit into your schedule once summer is over.

I'm not try to say that this three weeks is going to get me into shape and I'm never going to need to work out again. I'm not that stupid to think that only 3 weeks could get me into shape, I'm just trying to make the best of it to get a head start, because it's going to be easier for me to start to change when I'm not in school, rather than start right in the middle of finals or something. I'm not excpecting some miracle in three weeks.

Why would swimming shorten your life? I happen to think that swimming's a great workout. I used to swim 1500 or more yards 5 days a week when I was playing water polo, guess my life's significantly shorter haha.

You need to join a gym, don't matter if you don't like working out, I have the
best reason why on earth you need to do this: connections.

ANYBODY who is anybody in your town works out at the gym. I've met policemen, sheriffs,
Mr. Universe contestant, firemen, doctors, restaurant owners, professional
photographer, park ranger, life coach, college trainer, nurses, etc.

So far I've asked these people to help me out as extras on my film this fall: 2 Sheriffs,
1 Fireman, 1 life coach. You will find everything from tattoed bodies, mohawks,
to buzz cuts, to preppies, to grunge, to everything. Your gym is a mecca of extras.

JOIN A GYM and maybe you'll work out a little, you will however find a truckload of
people who will gladly be an extra.

or maybe its the pool chemicals? Just got back from the pool. Did 800 yards. Mostly freestyle, with some backstroke and breast stroke thrown in the mix. Feels good.

That is right up my alley. It is worth a good look. John, are you currently using this training program?
