K, I know that if this doesn't make it on the red one, then you will eventually implement it, and I promise not to whine if I don't win. I would love to see electronic lens contacts ala canon slr camera bodies for eos lenses. That way, the camera can control the lenses, and you could have a manual focus override on the lens ala many eos lenses.
If you have electronic contacts embedded in the PL mount on the camera body, then third parties (or RED) could make adaptors for various slr lenses, cine lenses that will eventually be made for this revolution, and standard cine lenses would obviously just ignore electonic input.
The electronics would send a signal or focus, zoom, and aperture to the lens.
The API will allow third parties create adaptors and write software to translate the signal to third party lenses.
This will allow users to define focus points, zoom distances, and lens aperture settings that can change over time.
Even if you are unable to get the full implementation with lenses done in time for the red one, it seems to me that adding the electronics and defining the basic interface for an API is doable by the end of the year :).
I've never understood why user definable focus/zoom over time has not yet been implemented in cameras with built-in servo-driven lenses. It seems so obvious.
