I would love to see a digital camera come out with pre-set frame guides for the various aspect ratios that can be brough up through a pop up menu or a jog dial on the viewfinder itself. When shooting a project for television, I find it incredibly frustrating that the majority of non 60,000 dollar plus cameras cannot be set up with ground glass replicating frame guidlines for say T.V. safe and 16:9 or 1.77. In the HDTV transition realm of T.V. shooting, where you so often have to shoot one spot for both traditional 4:3/T.V. Safe and 16:9, digital is really falling behind on these simple but necessary options. The best solution would be that you could combine any number of bright frame markings for any aspect ratio on the fly, and set them up as part of a scene file.
Especially now that the A Camera Operator is being eliminated as a position on union crews, a lot of DPs like myself are having to do more and more operating. These things are a huge help after we've taken time away from the eyepiece, and now we are being asked (or forced) to come back to it.
We will all bow at your feet if you can make this possible for us. Thank you,
