Imagine a steadicam system that uses MEMS (micro-electronic mechanical sensor) and actuators to dynamically balance a steadicam system? Sort of like a Segway, except that instead of a scooter, the system electronically stabilizes a camera system. Now imagine putting the camera on a long carbon fiber pole that you hold above you. Taa daa! No crane required for indy filmmaking. Then imagine you WANT shaky cam... the system then applies the shakycam algorithm to the platform. Anyway, once you move from mechanical to electronic stabilization... many new kinds of cinematic techniques are possible.
(Actually, I'm already working on designing such a system with a MEMS engineer.)
