View Full Version : Multiplexed Wireless Data Transmission

The idea is to have a small unit, perhaps the size of a pack of cards, which is able to multiplex transmission of encoded (RedCode I guess) data off the camera to a base unit which records - all over 802.11g.

Range isn't too much of an issue, within 40 feet or so would probably do it with a clearish line of sight.

This could also be multicast, so the whole set was saturated with the signal at roughly 10-12MB per second (this is making some serious assumptions about the data rate) - it would allow any compatible monitor to "listen" to the signal coming off the camera and monitor - that means a focus puller, producer, director, DP (if they aren't the op) and hey, the craftspeople munchin' on the bagels :)

The camera would need 5GB or so of cache, but that's very easy and cheap.

Wireless transmission of the full signal coming off the camera would be fantastic - running a teather is a nasty thing on an expensive camera, and I've seen it _nearly_ result in disaster from someone tripping over the monitoring + power umbilical.

Of course, that means the camera could also act as the master clock for every device on the set - so all sound recording could be trivially locked to picture TC without the need for a single wire.
