Given the large imager size I would like to have a camera that shoots both shallow and deep focus. Maybe a moving CCD imager block or other funky adaptor which giving the effect on focal length could also create some pretty eye-bending effects as a bonus.

Interesting idea but a backfocus nightmare.

Lenses give you this and how you should acheive this effect.

I don't think it would be that simple to design into Red.

Yeah, I know it's a crazy idea but the point it that it would be nice to call on Super 8/mini DV deep DOF when you need it then move back to anamorphic 65mm shallow DOF.

When I shoot 35mm, I miss 1/3" DOF and when I shoot with 1/3" I miss the same.

While it might be an engineering nightmare, it would be an incredibly useful feature even if you were limited to certain lenses and rez.

I think Red shooters who are used to 1/3" DOF ranges are going to be surprised how much freaking light they will need when you need deep focus in a shot.

Well, there is always the crop mode.
If you shoot in a cropped mode and use a wider lens you'll achieve a greater DOF.

Exactly - I'm wanting a variable mode version of this.
