A really cool feature that could guarentee smooth panning techniques would be a camera where the lens was able to rotate along a 45 degree (or so) path. The lens would be the actualy piece of hardware that would rotate at the user's speed that he/she wants. Just think about it now. All you need is a tripod, and the panning is up to the camera!!

SUH-weet!

That's what tripod heads are for.

To cater to a very very small portion of the market of RED purchasers that can't afford a cartoni focus or better tripod head by installing a mechanism in-camera that would cost at least $500 to accomplish this same task just wouldn't make good business sense.

If you could make a lens that could turn at a constant rate, with perfectly smooth motion, wouldn't you consider that more reliable than doing it manually by hand? It would be as if you could eletronically control the pan, with maybe a remote of some sort.

by moving the lens, you also have to move the sensor with it to keep the backfocus correct. and with that cmos swiveling back and forth... i dont know, it doesnt sound to good to me. i dont want to rely on some motor to constanty pan my lens and sensor around.

i dont know if you just forgot to say that the cmos has to move also, or you just didnt think about it.

The whole lens/sensor assembly would have to swing, would be idiotic (sorry) to build a smooth system to do that just to leave batteries, electronics etc stationary when you can pan the whole camera with a video head for free...

Would add thousands to the price (high precision mechanics are more expencive than electronics), 1 kg to the weight, make it bigger, and there is no need.

Alright fine. You all may like your tripods now, but when you jerk that tripod for an important shot, you're going to wish you had the automatic panner v1.0.

P.S. I can still win spot #97 right?

Maybe i'm missing something but that sounds like severing the body of your talent and inserting a mechanical rod that moves the upper half of their body around instead of just making them stand on a turntable.

Think outside the box - yes

Fill the box with 1000lbs of lead and then place it on your head- no

I think that the idea presented here is totally unrealistic. You want a camera to pan FOR YOU ? And IN camera!?
Your making yourself sound like someone thats NEVER shot anything seriously or has a concept on what it even means to do alittle cinematography etc, have you shot on the field with a dvx or anything ?
Trust Me..
YOU want to be in control of YOUR pan not some automated thing. Especially not IN camera panning...sorry dont mean to sound like a jerk but this idea sounds really really useless and would make for such unnecessary expenses and just complicates things for no reason. You want smooth panning? My Advice.....PRACTICE LEARN SHOOOT Learn some more and start developing technique!
To move a lens like that you would have all these new complications inside the camera including the focus issue already brought up.
This is just something you can easily do -PERFECTLY- assuming you have a decent tripod and a human arm

A motion control tripod head will accomplish this for less money and more reliably. Best of all, you can go down to the store right now and buy one.

Swiperstopswiping, my guess is you have not worked with professional tripod heads. They make all the difference in the world, like a Satchler. Of course, good fluid heads are not cheap; and you can't get those at your local Best Buy!

Alright alright, i get it, i'm an idiot. Does anyone else want to make any more posts telling me how stupid this idea is? Please feel free.

It came off the top of my head, and no, i have not used a fluid head tripod before, and have had some jerky shots with a low-end tripod, so this seemed to be a decent idea at the time.

You are a total idiot. How could you be so stupid? I highly advise you to just take your DVX, and crack it over your head right now. dumbass

Swiperstopswiping is now my favorite member. I can empathize with throwing an idea in the air only to have it drop kicked by everyone who walks by. Plus, he's hilarious. Now someone hook me up with a free sweet tripod.

Thanks for the compassion musiq021. Its a harsh world out there, and i suggest you toughen up in order to prepare yourself for the experts .

lol not only do ideas get the normal one over of criticism. But most also get 2 or three more passes when there's $1000 bucks on the line just to make sure they're dead. ;)

User 1: "I propose the RED camera be better than film."
User 2: *Thinks for a moment, can't come up with anything that might be worth $1000 "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's more pathetic than the time my aunt Clarice tried to sucker punch a baby."
User 1: :crybaby:

haha. well, if it makes all of you feel better, I will retire myself from the contest. I realize that I probably was going to win, but I feel that other people want this camera more than I do.

I'm glad to see you don't take yourself too seriously. That's good. But don't take it too hard either. We all started somewhere, and I believe that we all assumed that since you posted in the Red section, that you had some sort of background in the field. Well, at the very least used a pro (or semi-pro) tripod.

So cheer up, keep asking questions, search the forums. That's how you'll learn, especially if you can't put your hands on all the expensive toys out there. Next time start the thread with "newbie here, what about..." or something similar. This way, the user community will be more lenient. :)

Alrighty. Thanks Mr. Flintstone for the kind words.
