Winner wins RED reservation #97, and the winner will be sent the titanium reservation token. Reservations are worth $1000 toward the purchase of RED ONE. Non-transferable, non-refundable.
If Winner does not want the Red Reservation for any reason, I will "buy back" the Reservation for $500 at time of acceptance.
Ted Schilowitz, leader of Red, will be choosing the winner.

Given that we are putting our intellectual property up for grabs here, is there any way Jannard could get in on this to make it more worth our while? Even if someone does get spot #97 for RED(which is awesome in itself I might add) there's still a $16K pricetag thereafter that has to be dealt with.
...not trying to cause waves, but I had to ask. :/

This is not a Red Contest... this is a DVXuser contest. the $1000 reservation fee is coming out of my pocket. The Ideas are for Red of course, but are not being requested by Red. Ultimate goal in the end is everyone to get the camera they have dreamed of, and the best way to do that is to initiate conversation and cross talk ideas. People have been doing that for 6 months already without this contest , im just trying to put a small fire under the burner as we are getting closer to them needing to lock down the final design, and this last month is probally the last change people have to give their input for RED ONE.
If they use your idea; great; pat yourself on the back and be glad they are listening. Dont go asking Red for a free camera for your ideas, it's not gonna happen. You can be happy and brag to your friends that your idea made it into one of the most revolutionary cameras to come to us in quite some time.. a camera that in large part has been fabricated through the ideas of many of you have already shared here since day one.

alright...
And thank you Jared for setting this up. I knew it came out of your pocket so don't think I'm not greatful. What you're offering is great and we all appreciate it. I just thought I'd ask.
Jannard is being pretty business savvy though. Why hire a team of design consultants and experts when you can get people on the internet to do the job for free? :D

J,
I am not sure RED will allow this. I was specifically told when I got my reservation that it was not transferable.
I think the promo is a great idea, though. I hope it works out for you.

* EDIT -- 75...and already more than 140 posts in this precise moment! This camera is a hit! Jim I'm waiting for your launch@stock_market too! I want a reservation option too!

sort've like those Apache helicopter helmets that read the retina of your eye and allow you to control the missiles and 50cals with just a look. SOOOOO if I look at the pretty girl in the bikini that I see way behind my main subject out the corner of my eye, the cam knows to rack to her (oh this is so lame) to her (I can't say it)...you get the idea.

I do have a question about the actual contrest. It says "on July 1st, 2006 a random "best idea" will be selected." Does that mean that the idea will be selected randomly without merit consideration? You said you can post as many ideas as you like so I'd hope the prize would not be be awarded randomly, or I think the board would get spammed with nonsense. Just wanted to check, thanks.

I think you should select the 5-6 best ideas and then there should be a poll for the best one.

Yes it wont be totally random, it will be randomly picked from the best 3 ideas we see fit.
I wanted to thank DVUSER for hosting such a cool contest. I'm of the opinion that if I were to win (and I cannot afford 16k), it was meant to be and I will find a way to afford it. I'm getting married in a year, so that could make for one helluva wedding present right? Again I wanted to say thanks.

I was wondering, will they choose the best idea from this contest and incorporate it into their design, or will they look at all the ideas postedand try and incorporate some of them (even if they don't win, or are not even included in the finals round (the best ideas))? Because there are a lot of great ideas and I would love to see them incorportate a lot of these.

No they are not instigating this contest, nor are they promising to use any of the ideas. They are all reading the ideas daily though. And Im sure if they see something worth including they will. Ted Red is the one who pics the winner.

This camera launch is historical... I studied the History of the Motion Picture Technologies (video/consumer including) @film_school and I don't have notice of a success like that... if I didn't already believe in RED I would say it would be a surprise! But I must admit that it isn't. I mean: a big surprise. But I can't say the same only as surprise...now that's more accurate.

This is such a good idea.
This is the kind of thing that is going to make this camera stand above the rest. Thanks Jarred for putting on such a cool contest. This is the reason DVXuser is know not only as one of the best (In my opinion the best) Production board on the internet, but a community that is changing the way video and film production is being done.

yikes not sure about that, i mean it can shot SD, HD 2K and 4K, 60 30 frames rates, alot more than that, uncompressed 4:4:4 but 24fps? hrmm, arent we asking a little much?
Jarred Land
06-26-2006, 10:33 PM
ha ha ha.. yeah it will only shoot 23 and 25 fps.. sorry :)
thats a joke for you serious people out there.. of course it will shoot 24.
i wish i could shove everyone in this forum into a studio and force you all to make a movie together with unlimited equipment, i of course could be some use as either acting or production :) wink wink, hint hint.

Not sure whether or not this idea has been posted before - all or in part.
My idea isn't a concrete "do-this"-idea - it's more of a philosophy really: Make the camera "open source".
What I'm suggesting is that RED makes all the information about connectivity and specifications available to the public to open up the camera to third party developers who want to make accessories, plug-ins, their own codecs, cages, steadicam-systems - whatever really.
Make the software on the camera updateable - and make an API so that software developers can develop their own specific software for the camera - like calibration tools, video analyzing programs, motion control systems that integrates into the camera etc.

Unfortunately this doesn't guarantee quality and reliability.
Will you take the risk to shoot professionaly a movie with an open source camera where no one will take responsibility if something goes wrong, e.g bugs in firmware?
It would be a viable solution only if the quality, reliability and interoperability of the open source firmware were controlled and certified by an independent company.
