Very nice job! Do you have any footage?
You guys are amazing. I've been trying to make one out of wood and it has been so painful I wanna kill myself.
Then I see this thing, which looks incredible, and now I simply MUSt kill myself.
This looks great.
You're awesome.

I wonder how many replies it will take before somebody asks how much you'd charge them for one of those... let's ask Mr. Owl.
Mr. Owl? How many posts does it take before somebody asks RWM to sell them one of his aluminum skaters?
"Six"
Welp... you heard Mr. Owl... so how much do you want for one of those bad boys?
Sweet. I'm even impressed by the dof you got in the pictures of the dolly. :)

Welp... you heard Mr. Owl... so how much do you want for one of those bad boys? Nice, I second that!
:dankk2: Thanks for the compliments!
@ MattinSTL and moe52:
MILLIONS!!! Why? Because it was very painful to build it. :cheesy: I do it once and never again! Later I post some making of pictures. My Arms and Fingers have now double size but I save a lot of money! For the Skater? No! For the Bodybuilding Studio!!! ;-)

Nice to see that someone realize that! :)

Thanks! *I’m getting red* Hu? …It's skater porn… ??? What’s that??? …but sounds interesting! ;)
@Forrest Schultz: I make this pictures with a Nikon D100
Footage comes tomorrow or at the weekend. For now, here are some pictures from the making of RADIATUS. There you can see also what I use to make it.

Now I can see why you're only making one! You probably don't want to know how fast a water jet cutter equipped with some CAD data would cut that profile. Did you make your rings the same way?
Now I'm even more impressed....awesome effort there.

Aluminum kind of sucks doesn't it? I mean working it... do you have aluminum chips ALL OVER your house? People think I bought glitter carpet. If you walk barefoot in my house you may get an aluminum sliver... I tried to keep the filings in the shop and they just won't stay there. By the pic of your hand there I'm guessing you can relate.
skater porn....i love it....
the fact that you built that by hand makes me love you even more.

RWM that thing is gorgeous. Where did you pick up the dial faces? And do you plan on selling your design/template/specs?
@guskersthecat:
Yeah! - That will make it very easy but unfortunately, I didn’t have this equipment. :crybaby: No, the rings are made with a turning lathe. (Hope that is the right word, comes from Babelfish) :D
@Cryogenic Filmworks:
The dial faces? You mean this pieces? http://www.kipp.com/cms/wm?catId=1669&CmiProdId=437ada56bcd88637c4ff0672a5d7dc25&showTables=true&nextFamily=false
“...do you plan on selling your design/template/specs?”
NO, because I didn’t have anything more drawings or something like that. That’s why I’m posting the making of pictures. A little wink for you and all other who planning to build a skater (I post it also @ the HBS-Forum): Short before I finish my Skater, I take a look into the Skater User Manual (you find it on the P+S homepage). On the first site, there is a very nice drawing of the Skater! Make it bigger and you have a much better shape then mine!
So, here we go! Here is the first footage from my RADIATUS! Radiatus H264.mov (http://www.insomnia-dreams.com/Radiatus H264.mov)
PS: Right now I’m building the laser pointer for it!
what are some dimensions?
I love your skater. Those shots with that music was extremely bizarre.

I assume since I saw that curved dolly move in the vid that you can get that out of it. Is it just the front one or all three? Does making all three wheels adjustable give you the potential for a different sort of move? I'm thinking about making one of these myself. Or fantasizing anyway.
Thanks.

I want one. O man, I want one.
@HappyGobo: Yes, ALL 3 wheels MUST be adjustable!
Here is a setup video from my RADIATUS including the lazerpointer an how it works:
-----> RADIATUS SETUP VIDEO (http://www.insomnia-dreams.com/RadiarusSetupSmall2.mp4) <-----
RWM - Nice piece of engineering!
Does it matter if the rotation plates/wheel hubs on the base platform are exactly the same distance from each other? Or to put it another way, what is the distance relationship between each of the wheels?
thanks,
dmc
dmc, the distance between the wheels depends of the Skater size. You have to find the middle of the Skater, measured from the rotation axis of each wheel.
Chris Messineo
07-18-2006, 10:33 AM
That setup video is awesome. Your craftsmanship is incredible.
I wish I had the skill to do something like that. :(
Chris
Thanks RWM,
So just to be clear, it's the same exact distance from each of the wheel centers to the midpoint (where the camera mounts) of the skater that matters?
For some reason I thought that maybe the wheel centers had to form an equilateral triangle so that the calculation chart works the same.

holy frizizzle...
my question is what would oyu use on rough surfaces? or just say screw it and use a glide cam?
LOL!!!
It’s the same when I ask you - what would you use under stormy conditions. Definitely not a glide cam! Right? It’s not made for those conditions. Any tool has his limitation. But back to your question. Rough surfaces? 2 C-Stands, 2 levelling-supports and a plate or take a flat door or…

Not only is it functional but it looks cool too! It looks like something Apple would design if they made dollys. BRAVO!!!

What a pain to download.
???
Explain "pain" please! What do you mean?
Justin Kuhn
10-27-2006, 11:15 AM
First I had to get an account there. It took me a minute to figure out where I had to download it from. Then the file was so huge I wasn't sure for a second if I was actually downloading or not. Then once I got it, the file had some really jerky playback (likely I don't have enough RAM installed). The entire process wasn't as easy as it should have been. But thanks for offering the clip free, in any case!
lol….
>>>Then the file was so huge….
Well, what do you think what we offer there? YouTubes? You get all the files in broadcast quality and these files are huge, particularly the HD or HDV files.
>>>…the file had some really jerky playback (likely I don't have enough RAM installed).
Looks like you grab the HDV version. Why, if you don’t really need it? The PAL or NTSC Versions are much smaller and your computer has (hopefully) no problems to play them smoothly – or did other (full) HDV Files with very low compression play smooth on your computer? I don’t think so…
Anyway, have fun with it.

Very good, awesome job!
I have a question, I really don't see why does the skater base have to have that strange shape? I mean, why isn't it symmetrical?
I'm asking this because it's easier to cut, if it has an easier shape.

Jason Miller

it doesn't have to, its all about style, there are some that are some what symmetrical.
Derrick_SA
07-26-2008, 12:37 AM
there could be a lot of reasons for the shape.
1. Less material, less weight.
2. Easier to handle the skater dolly.
3. Astetic reasons.
4. The more complicated it looks the less people will try and make it, and rather buy one
the list goes on I guess, but I like the look of the "weird" shape.

were those two "rings" that goes over the body and hold the wheels bought just as they are at these photos?

looks like he used the diy design posted by "teddybear" a long time ago.
http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=40901
the design is very close to the original p+s mini skater. even works with the p+s calculator.

I made one based on someone else's cheap design, and I think I would benefit from a less equilateral triangle--but that wasn't really part of the design, just the way I did it. Might new a new shape soon.

One question, this requires a smooth surface. Can someone recommend a portable smooth surface that can be carried around ? Perhaps a smooth glossy rubber mat ? Not sure what this would be like though, but its nice to have a portable smooth surface to carry around..

just posted this over on the original plywood skater thread, but thought I would put it here too in case some aren't on that thread...
Hey there, I am new to this thread (and dvxuser actually.... great find, its a great resource!) and have only read through about half of it so far, so I hope this question isn't redundant. I am wondering about the two main designs that seem to be presented on this forum. One, the plywood skater by teddybear, uses the following:
(this is like a cross-section of the outer edge of one of the wheel wells...)
http://erictorrie.com/pictures/3%20layer%20holder.jpg
while the aluminum version (the radiatus by RWM) uses the following setup:
http://erictorrie.com/pictures/2%20layer%20holder.jpg
I am wondering if anyone who has made these has any input on the pro's and con's of these two ideas. I am planning on making an aluminum skater, but use the top diagram (teddybear's design) as my plan, mostly because it seems simpler.
I am going to make it out of 1/4 inch aluminum, and am cutting out all the parts with a water cutter. I am just getting the CAD files into the right format right now, and possibly am changing the design up a bit...
Any thoughts on the wheel positions? I am thinking that perhaps making the back wheel more centered (making it more like an equilateral triangle) might offer more stability... but the wheel then might get in the way of the back of the camera... thoughts?
I'm not to worried about the wheel positions not being the same as the real skater, as I can make new formulas and calculators in excel to compensate, and I plan on using a laser most of the time.
I'll be posting build pics here next week. If all goes well, I should be able to duplicate my build pretty easy.
Sorry this was so long!
Cheers!
Eric
