My XP used to recognize the USB output of my digital camera as a new device, CD device Etc.
Now, I have to disconnect from the server, restart and the camera is recognized as harddisk "F" one of the disconnected server discs.
Any ideas how to correct this ?

I don't know much about this, but what happens now when it doesn't get recognized? It just doesn't show signs of being connected? I know for cases where XP assigns an already taken drive letter (which may be happening) to a flash/thumb drive (which in principle should be the same as a camera, I think), you can fix this issue in "Disk Management."
I don't know if you already know how to get there, but just in case:
you can go to any of the "My computer" icons (including the one in the start menu), right click and choose "Manage." Then from the list on the left, choose "Disk Management" Then check if the camera is even recognized as a drive (which, as far as I know, it should be). Look for it as you scroll past whatever disks are there (eg Disk 0, Disk1, etc..) You should be able to identify a drive letter on one of those "disks" based on the rough size of the drive. If your camera has, for example, a 512mb card in it, and the computer recognizes it at all, there should be a drive in there that (approximately) corresponds to this (something approx 512mb, eg 508mb). (Be careful if there are also other devices with similar drive sizes plugged into your computer) If you see it, (and it may well have been assigned to a letter you know should belong to another drive) try assigning a different letter to it (I don't remember if you have to reassign a letter to the drive that had its letter "stolen," or if it goes back to normal automatically) by right clicking on the drive and selecting "change drive letter and paths," and picking a wierd one like "Y," that is to say a drive letter you definitely know is not being used. (NOTE: only do this if you are comfortable with changing the drive letters (I don't know If you need network permission or anything like that), and of course take care not to format or delete anything, which unfortunately can happen more easily that one might imagine:)). Then see if anything changes and if you can access the drive. I am not really a computer guy and I don't know if this deals with what you are experiencing but I hope it helps.
P.S. if you have any questions, of course feel free to ask

What number five said should solve your problem. I used to work for apple supporting ipods ( among other things ) and this issue occurred a lot on networked computers
