Two questions:

1.Why can't I mess with the V-Frequency Detail in 720 mode?

2.What does detail coring do? I know it's supposed to reduce the noise in the image but how does it do this? What is the drawback of overusing it (since uping any setting always has some drawback).

1. It's always set to thin. v-freq-detail is only applicable in SD mode, and it's a concession to interlaced televisions; it can vertically blur the image to reduce flicker on an interlaced television. You don't need that nor want that in 720p mode.

2. It doesn't reduce noise, it changes the threshhold at which the Detail Lvl edge-enhancement circuitry will or won't edge-enhance fine detail. The system can't really tell the difference between super-fine detail and image noise, so if you have the coring set really low, the system will edge-enhance all fine detail (according to your Detail Level setting) and that will probably also include edge-enhancing the noise. Which makes it more visible. So raising the coring raises the threshold, and makes the noise not get edge-enhanced, which makes it less visible. The tradeoff is that, again, the system can't tell the difference between legitimate fine detail and noise, so as you raise the threshold to avoid sharpening the noise, you'll also be limiting the amount of legitimate fine detail that will get sharpened too.

Appreciate it. Can't wait for your book which I assume will cover all this stuff.
