If you shoot DVCPRO-HD or DVCPRO50, it's always recording four channels. If you're shooting DVCPRO or DV to the P2 card, you can also tell it to record four channels.

If you're shooting to tape, you only get two channels.

When shooting with four channels, two come from the XLR ports, and the other two come from the onboard microphone.

Are those in automatic mode, channel 3 and 4?

There's a good table illustrating the various recording options and how the various inputs are routed to Ch.1/2/3/4 located in the HVX200 manual.

However, in brief, when recording in DVCPRO HD format, when you set the camera to route XLR Ch.1 input to record on Ch.1 and XLR Ch.2 input to record to Ch 2, then the internal (built-in) microphone's Left channel is routed to Ch. 3 and the Right channel is routed to Ch. 4, this is how I have the audio set up most of the time, making the most of four channels, for example, Ch. 1 and Ch. 2 are recording what's coming from the mixer and Ch 3. and Ch 4. are recording a stereo guide track (or ambient track, however you end up using it) from the camera mic. Those extra channels come in handy.

I would like to see some enterprising third party come up with hack for the camera that would provide a way to run external inputs to Ch. 3 and Ch. 4, bypassing or replacing the internal mic, which is reasonably good for an internal mic, but I'd love to run more than two channels from external sources.

Yes that'd be great!
