Currently I have the following:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1 gig of RAM
GeForce 6600GT 256 mg

I've been able to upload MXF files from the HVX200 into Avid and play them without any trouble, meaning I could edit HD footage fine. However, when trying to play extracted Raylight AVI files from MXF's, my computer chugs like crazy. This doesn't bug me too much as I won't really need to use Raylight since I have Avid but it worries me about trying to view other HD outputs.

I've already decided that I'm going to by at least one more gig of RAM. The other thing I'm considering is getting a processor upgrade. I have a Gigabyte GA-k8nf-9 motherboard. The people who made my computer told me that even though it currently has only a Athlon 64 3200 chip in it, I could replace that easily with a Athlon 64 X2 4400 chip. While the processor speed isn't that much higher, the X2 is a dual core which I've heard makes a big difference. My question is do you guys think it's worth the $460 it'll cost to go from the Athlon 64 3200 to the Athlon X2 64 4400? The 3200 to 4400 difference isn't enough for me but will the dual processor's make a big difference.

For the record, I don't want to switch to Intel even though i've been told it's better (it would mean getting a new motherboard and I HATE Intel). Also, is it true that AMD is about to come out with a new set of CPUs and the X2 prices will soon drop?

Finally, is there much to be gained by getting a better video card since it seems that the programs I tend to use (Avid, Combustion, After Effects, and Nuendo) don't seem to make much use of the video card. Thanks.

It sounds like the CineForm line of products are much better and faster than Raylight. www.cineform.com
Is Avid multithreaded? If so, it should really take advantage of a dual core proc. I know Premiere Pro 1.5 and 2.0 are. (If that helps.)

Hi there. intel are coming out with several fast new processors eg desktop one codenamed conroe. They (intel) have compared a test with their mid range conroe processor compared to an overclocked AMD fx60 and it was much faster! Meant to be august but may now be out in July. I expect AMD to be ready with counter measures. If you can, may be better holding off for a couple of months i would think :)
