I was informed by someone closely linked to panasonic in australia that a work around for getting footage at 720p variable frame rates in the PAL camera was to shoot onto the P2 card using any of the cameras set frame rates in 720p and then switch the output to 1080 and export through the cameras component leads into your NLE as 1080 25 which is currently supported. I have no component capture card to try it so have no idea if its true or not, the man seemed awfully confident that this was how the industry would be solving the problem whilst waiting for apple and avid to catch up.
anyone know if this would work??:dankk2:

Well, maybe your Panasonic information guy came here for info :)

In theory, it should work. I just don't have the cash to try it out (no budget for Kona LH- I've a PCI-X mac...)

I've got a quad with a decklink card (sdi in only). I may be able to give it a try if I can get hold of a component-sdi converter.

How do you select in camera for the signal out at 1080 from the p2?

I think he must have been referring to the option under the AV IN/OUT setup - CMPNT OUT SEL (component output select.) You can choose 576i, 720p or 1080i under here.
