Just watched it. I think that was a fun video. I liked the music and the way you made sure not to blow out the highlights when filming the sky. It looked like it was hard to keep the flying airplanes in frame, and I think you did a good job on some of the planes near the end. I liked the barrel roll and the landing in particular. Good job and keep having fun with the camera! It is a blast to use. Something that might be fun in the future is to put a story together and shoot it. It changes everything when what you are filming is a short or short short film. Working on one film project is like an intensive class on the camera.

Thanks. These guys are a lot of fun. Next weekend I'm going back out because they're supposed to have a jet flying. Not a ducted fan, but a real turbine engine airplane. That should be a blast. Some of these guys have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into this. Really great bunch of people.

The camera was locked down for the first part and I discovered it was much easier to track the planes handheld.

I think I really need a follow focus to keep up with quick action like that. I did a lot of fumbling for the focus ring.

Thanks for the feedback!

No more feedback? Anyone?

Ummm... yeah... looks fine. Not very interesting, at least not to me. It's just a bunch of shots of some little airplanes and the sky. Maybe others that are more passionate about planes will find it more interesting than I...

I agree that you should put together a storyllne, and give it a go. You'll get the responses you're looking for then.

good luck

I'm not sure why, but I half expected that to be more than what the title suggested. I was sorely dissapointed. why was that in widescreen? Why weren't the planes in the frame for even fifty percent of the shots? Who are these people? I'm confused. put an idea behind your work and i'll grab on, so will the others on this site.

Conrad and all, I'm learning. Weren't you in my shoes at one point? Instead of asking me what's the point, why not give me some feedback. That was why I posted this in the first place. I would love some feedback good or bad. If I can't get the technical side down I'll never get the right composition and hence never produce a good film.

if you are looking for advice than here ya go. try a fig rig for following airplanes. it will get you very steady shots while tracking fast moving subjects. i shot this motocross jump thing with mine and was able to follow the action pretty smoothly i think.

other than that, just to agree with others, your stuff should tell a story, not just be a bunch of footage lumped together. since it's a sport thing (sorta..) maybe show one pilot, do a freeze frame of him and put his name, then show his flying, so on and so forth... this would make it more interesting....

i should note that my mx video is nothing more than footage lumped together. however, it is all action and cut to music so it kinda works i guess.... whatever....

My point to asking the questions I did was to understand where you were coming from. Mabe you had a reason behind cropping to widescreen and the like. I guess I was (am) confused about the intentions of the posted video. It seems to me that not alot of thought or artistic vision went in to the production of this airplane video. I'm not trying to be mean, I just have a hard time critiqueing a "point and shoot" type of video, techical or otherwise. If you want feed back on things like exposure and that sort of thing, yeah; it all looked fine, but if you want real constructive criticism, then you have to put some work into your projects. Mabe you could have made us feel how fun it is to fly RC airplanes or shown the trials and hardships of airplane owning, make us feel something, and WANT to watch your video. And yes of course I was (am?) in your shoes, we all are, that is the point of this forum. Just make something your proud of and worked really hard on and you will get more constructive feedback. That's all I got.
Thanks for listening.

Thanks Conrad. Yeah at this point I just want to make sure I have the basics down. I'll post something else here with more of a story soon.

Sorry I had to take down the footage. A 17mb file and my server don't get along too well.
