Well, I have been getting into photo and used a simple program (the gimp-some of you may know it) and this is my final product. The photo was scanned in because I am saving for a digital (it takes ahwile for a 15 yr. old), so it is a little dusty in some spots. But, Id still appreciate comments.
Thanks! http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/3116/cus10006special28bm.jpg

Thats a good picture, pretty good composition and depth of field. However, the "subject in color and all else in grayscale" look has really been beaten to death, and many folks, clients, and artists will frown upon the overusage.
I suggest instead of completely desaturing the background, desaturate it partially, maybe 50%, and use either colored layers or a hue shift to bring background colors a little closer to each other. The end effect is similar, the subject pops out, but it doesn't have "that" look to it.
Look on ebay, and you can find a version of photoshop 7 or even CS for farily cheap. Those will have everything (and more) a beggining phtographer/photoshoper would need.
Nice pic.

So somthing like this? I like it, but I still have play around with it. It's a little rough.

Yup. That's very good, taking some of the yellows, reds, and magentas and swinging them slightly towards a greener pallet and then putting in Levels/Curves yeilds:

My example pushes the extreme, but you get the idea.
Your second version has more life to it, and yet the subject still stands out.

i agree. i like rapier's better.
just remember when you use photoshop you don't want people to look at your photo and immedately think "photoshop", like with the first b&w/color image. That was the biggest mistake everyone always made in college (graphic design) —*way too much overuse of photoshop and effects and filters.

Thanks Rapier my second was a little bland and I like how you brought out the colors a little more. One more question: Do you think I should tone down the lighting on the flower or keep it as bright as it is?
Thanks

I actually prefer bfischinger's first shot.
It's quite nice.
They're all good though.

Thanks Estebeverde-
The second picture posted wasn't as sharp as it could be and I would agree that a shraper picture would look better. Like this:

Scratch that- I'm just using a mouse, nothing fancy. I thought you were talking about tools in Photoshop or something...

One question though- does the screen actually appear on the tablet or was that just in the flash video.

There are different models that have different features.
The tablet that is also a screen is a couple of grand.
The others are control surfaces. They are very accurate and comfortable. It might be best to start with one of those first.
