One easy way is to hook up a camera to your pc via firewire, then output to a tv via composite or s-video. I guess this used to be a recommeded method, but for some reason it's not anymore. I haven't had any problems using my DVX100A...
There are also capture/video cards that can do this. I hear good things about the Matrox Parhelia.

I have an Nvidia GEForce FX5200 video card, and it has an S-Video Out, which I connect via S-Video to my preview monitor. Then I go to my desktop properties and open the Nvidia display window and change my "Display Properties" from single monitor, to "clone" When I open up Premiere Pro 1.5, it automatically converts from a full screen clone of my desktop, to a full screen clone of my preview window in PPRO. Thats what works for me, but it all depends on your video card and connection.

I purchased the Canopus Digital Converter to output to my Production monitor but it will also work with a tv

Using the DVX to upload will eventually clog the heads, on our second short film we actually got the red X of death because we had used the DVX100a to upload our footage. I went to a local camera story and bought a small Panasonic Mini-DV PVDV101, and we use that as a deck. It also gives me another camera to use for my own personal projects, or behind the scenes.

But back to the output, usually while editing, i'll have my PVDV plugged in through firewire, and have the video set to DV and desktop playback, then I'll just hook my PVDV up to my tv and have a nice 30' editing monitor. It also helps when resizing, because you know what will fit on a TV and what won't. It puts no wear on my camera, and since it's not the DVX, it wouldn't matter anyways, it's just a deck. I recommend it to anyone, since the firewire output assures good quality. Definitely makes it easier for my collaborators to see while I'm editing, since they don't want to search my screen for the video preview. Also allows you to step back and see how your footage is coming from a viewer perspective, as opposed to viewing your cuts with the footage.

I have an old JVC dvl120 u, you can get them off ebay for less than 100$. firewire out to that then s-video out to the monitorl. Works perfect.

The problem when doing the firewire to camera to tv is that the TV is most likely not calibrated correctly and not to mention it doesn't have the line resolution as a SD monitor has. IE 550 vs 400+. It is best to get a professional production monitor to really see the faults. You can find bargain on EBAY under Sony PVM series...just be patient but it is worth it on the long run. AS for HD...that is a whole different animal. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can give you that information when asked. Just make sure there a blue only option on the monitor to calibrate and good monitors uses BNC connections vs RCA plugs.
