I use Canopus ProCoder to convert my Avid QT Ref files to mpeg for DVD. I use the option DVD - DVD Pal (mastering quality). Can anybody tell me what the best settings are? like bitrate, numbre of pases, etc.. Thank you.

Bitrate is directly proportional to the quality of the compressed image. Higher bitrate, better image.
Of course, in the real world, some players have trouble reading media, and therefore higher bitrates can be dangerous at times.
Single vs Multi-pass encoding doesn't have a definite better/worse, it depends on the situation.
There are a number of threads in the ProCoder section of the Canopus forums. I recommend popping over there.

I just output my timeline to Lossless avi (for storeing as a master).
Then I take that footage and convert to mpeg with TMPGEnc (that's the stupidest name for a product, almost as stupid as the word stupidest :) )
This allows me to retain the highest quality during the down conversion process from HD, and keep the widescreen, and color correct, normalize, add flags for 24p display, and all the good stuff for making dvd's look the way you want them to look.
I compress at 8k.
Then I author with the TMPGEnc aurthoring product, or the easier one I got with my Sanyo HD1 camera. I think it's called dvd workshop.
Other ways seem to not do the progressive and the 24p correctly.
If your 24p dvd does not play like a store bought dvd, you did something wrong.

"Tsunami MPEG Encoder" I guess was too long for some folks, so it got shortened to T-MPG-Enc
A bit unfortunate name after the 2004 tsunami, but I'd still argue that it's no worse than our ADVCxxx names, which people always tend to slaughter...

At least that explaination explains what they were thinking when doing this.
It's just unusual and difficult to remember, and say.
Do you just say each letter, or try to pronounce it as a word?
....That's not a question you need to answer, just a thought outloud.
In any case, it seems to do the best quality in compression, and being a smooth process.

I've normally heard it pronounced as "Tee-Em-Peg-Enc"
