I guess everyone will hate me after this :banned:

I was at NAB.

The RED camera sounds really GREAT on paper, and even looked cool (different).

On the other hand it's only on paper! It's always easy to say how good something will be, but will it actually be good?!

I just wanted more, I wanted some footage, not just an incomplete metal frame.

I guess we will have to wait and see.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Great introductions from Barry and Jarred at the Panasonic booth. I love the frame rates on the HVX! Now I need to save my pennies to buy one.

I guess that's the double edged sword of pre-release buzz. Very similar (in a lot of ways) to the HVX campaign. I guess the most positive aspect (beside everyone saving for the cam) is that it really puts the pressure on the company to deliver.

I too was surprised by the lack of anything from Red. A mock-up or prototype kind of let the steam out of hype for me.

I guess there's always next NAB (what a jip)

Yeah, I wasn't all that excited either. Lots of talk. Although, maybe they'll actually produce something cool?

At least with Panasonic, you knew the VariCam and P2 all existed when they were hyping up the HVX. Instead, RED tells us of the "Mysterium" sensor which will revolutionize video!

Alls I gots to say is they called it the "mysterium Sensor."
Seriously, the fuck is that!? Imagine the conversation that went down for this-

"So Johnson, how's work going on the D-800 processor."
"The what?"
"The D-800, for the RED?"
Oh... yeah... you probably didn't get the email that was sent out."
"Email? No I've been standing by this water cooler all morning talking about Hilary Duffs teeth."
"Oh I know, they're huge right?
"Totally. What's this email though?"
"Oh yeah. The D-800, it's got a new name now.... Mysterium."
"Oh... I see..."
"Yeah, my 8 year old son came up with it while he was playing Dungeons and Dragons... It was between 'Mysterium' and 'The Cobra-kai Sensor'."
"Hmmm.... Good choice."

RED delivered what it promised for NAB. I personally would kill to see footage from it. On the other hand, we knew ahead of time that there would be no footage this time around.

Also, as someone pointed out on another thread, there has been investments for preordering, and with people like Jim and Tim involved in a project like this, this WILL be produced. I think doubting their abilities to hit the deadline comes from our wariness from all of these small video equipment companies that are based out of people's garage. A lot of times these small companies miss their projected dates by a LONG shot but this is the president of Oakley sunglasses, along with a very professional team of individuals putting their reputation on the line. They can't mess up. Have some faith guys.

So what if they miss the end of the year, this camera is taking us leaps and bounds ahead of anything on the market now. As far as I'm concerned they only have one thing to prove, the picture. If they come through I'll take out the loan to get this set up.

Come fall, according to the Red team we should see some 4k footage.....If they deliver on that.....We're in business!

WHat leaps and bounds? There's nothing there yet.

Actually there was a secret back room at NAB showing 2k footage from a prototype RED. I don't know what it looked like but many of the most influential people in cinema reserved a RED because of that demo.

1) it wasn't secret. We told everyone and invited everyone back there to see it

2) we were not showing 2k footage from the camera. Will show 4k footage in the autumn and that's the first showing we'll show anyone of the footage from the camera.

3) why they're reserved? Well, what else in the pipeline is even as remotely interesting as RED?

The RED team was showing Super 16mm footage to give a good idea of what picture quality elements the RED will be capable of. Needless to say, the concept footage was impressive and well put together. They also answered questions on the RED's progress and RED codec stuff.

That back room was a production workflow demo, with FCP running at 2k... as we all know acquisition is just half the battle, even at 2k.
