I started thinking about that wonderful Cine Gamma Curve which gives us that wonderful film like look we take for granted from our DVXs and HVXs and how a "Cine Gamma Curve" was being incorporated in Red?
I thought I read somewhere that the "father" of the varicam and dvx was part of the red team. Is this true?

I hope it'll be not just a feature you can just turn on or off, but adjust freely as you want.
I'm dreaming of a touchscreen, where you can edit the gamma curve with a pen like in photoshop and see you results on a production monitor like this:

Bah, touch screen is definately a bad idea IMHO. They don't last the abuse, and sooner than you think, you can't acess your menus. Besides, touchscreen is a real pain in the set. Have you ever shot with sony consumer camcorders? Awful.
Cheers!

Marcus,
I am not sure a pen is such a good interface but I think you have hit on a really awesome idea here.
I remember reading an article in American Cinematographer where either Paul Cameron (or Dion Beebe) was saying that when they overlit the faces for the cab interiors (to avoid noise issues) to be graded down in post, it was a really difficult and counterintuituve thing for the cinematographer.
In my own experience shooting the F900 and Varicam, I have later been bummed out looking at gain noise in low light and wished I had shot at a higer lighting level and graded the exposure down in post. It is really easy to get sucked into trusting that "what you see is what you get" mentality when shooting HD and working under time contraints.
Imagine if there was a way to apply simple color grades to the preview image as a way to previz rgb/hsl/levels grades in post. It would be so helpful.
On the otherhand, it might be better just to grab a still image from the stream (Jannard said this was a goal in another post) and shoot it over to a laptop for this sort of thing. You might also be able to use a software from the posthouse with real settings for later use in this scenario.
Now I don't know what I want...:(

take a look at L.O.T.R.s.
They take the so called "beautiful" film & automatically change colors, etc. everything in post.
That beautiful "film" could be attributed to post...colors are seen to be like night and day, so the colors the camera man shot is not what you get.
Same for the broadcast guys who used to give me tape...so concerned about colors, etc., and then I would run it through and change everything.
Maybe "film" has been dead for awhile.
i.e. all the concern about colors, well I have already taken your piece of fruit, for example, and turned it pink in post. :-) So point is, having this just gives an extra option...a nice one, but is not necessary.

Better than Gamma options is to shoot in RAW! Then you can tweak your gamma curves after the fact. If you have even worked with an DSLR and shot RAW files, you'll know the power.
THAT'S what I'm looking for. Althose stops of latitude and full control of the final image. Not, throwing away lots of data in the Camera with a Cine Gamma.

If I'm shooting something, I would want to be able to toggle between un-adjusted source and multiple gama presets, for example, if there is a look I'm shooting for perhaps I can have a few presets for that so that I can check each shot and then actually record un-adjusted so that I would have more info to work with in post, does this make sense?

Do you know what kind of storage would take to shoot RAW 4K? But nontheless, RED is going to do that!

The only time I can see myself shooting RAW is when I'm in a controlled studio situation and tethered to a massive high speed storage unit. Most of the time I would like to shoot like I do now, untethered and dialing in a gamma.
The bigger the files, the longer it takes to process effects and other things. We're not talking a single DSLR image any more but enough images and data to stop an eastbound freight!
