I came across this short about 3 years ago when I had just started getting into idie filmmaking (and After Effects). Anyway, this guy pumped out a bunch of free After Effects tutorials that I used. I think he was 19 back then. I would guess that he is 22/23 now. He ended up at LucasArts for a while after some of his work spread around the web. He is asking for donations to make a 2nd version of Ryan vs. Dorkman. I donated $10 and just thought I would help him spread the word. You can read the details of it all at the links below.

I have never met him or even emailed him for that matter, but have been very inspired by his drive and dedication. Make sure to at least watch Ryan vs. Dorkman (made it when he was 19!). You AE junkies will enjoy it. If only I would have found my true love in filmmaking back when I was 19!

sort of dissapointing as they didn't use the entire space/warehouse.

Sorry, but if I see one more lightsaber video, I will personally invent the lightsaber just so I can poke my own eyes out with it.

He's got a job. He can pay for it like the rest of us do.

LOL. You guys are brutal. I think he just worked at LucasArts for a couple of projects. What were you doing when you were 19? I know I wasn't teaching myself After Effects, building websites, and making movies like this. I was in the Navy wondering what the hell I was going to be when I grew up. And I don't think I grew up until I was 25.
:)

No, it is not a perfect little short and yes it is a Star Wars "fan film". That is not the point. The point is that he made it when he was 19, posted free tutorials for all to use, and just seems like a good kid (okay he is 22/23 now and not a kid). Watch it again and pay attention to some of the edits and shots. Not groundbreaking, buy they exced many of the shorts I have seen here made by people with experience. I'm telling you, you are going to hear more about this guy as he gains some more experience.

Anyway, I'm not pushing it. Just saw it as a young man doing something right with his life who was asking for a little help.

:crybaby:

snodart, I admire your willingness to support someone with conviction and talent. You sure you don't wanna be a producer?

But I think it might be hard to find others who'll share your interest in this regard. I mean, most indie video filmmakers are more desperate to save money to finance their OWN shorts. The dude you're talking about already got 15 minutes of fame and I think it's up to him use it and take it to the next level. And the fact he was only 19 (and now 22) inspires even less generosity from me. The guy has years and years to work at his craft and make his fame and fortune. He's got 10 years on me. There may be big fans of his original short film who will happily send him money to see the next installment of his series. If so, it's an interesting model for indie filmmakers, only further undermining the "studios and networks" (if we can "charge" people on the internet to finance and subsequently view our work, why would we ever need a Disney or Universal)? But filmmakers on DVX are probably going to be the least sympathetic audience. That said, can anybody give me $10 for my next short? I used to be 19 too.

sean90291, you make some great points.

Oh well, I did what I could to help the guy. Time to get back to my hero-fest entry.

I will gladly send you $10 to support an indie film. All you have to do is convince me that you need it.

Why doesn't he post on Craigslist and ask someone to donate warehouse/garage space?

But, I think it's good you are trying to help him. And you'd probably make a good Producer.
