The Question: If the 'Field Interpolate' filter is placed upon a clip of HD 1080i footage in Premiere Pro, and then the 'Adobe Media Encoder' is used to export that footage to a 720p 30fps file, then HOW does that video quality compare to the standard resolution progressive scan video captured by some higher-end camcorders?
I manually adjusted the shutterspeed to 30fps when shooting the 1080i since it is my understanding that the field-interpolate effect looks at only half the lines to compute the other half, and that this will yield the proper amount of motion-blur when the effect is applied.
The theory is that since HD has roughly twice the vertical resolution, then the loss of half the lines becomes a non-issue when compared to standard resolution progressive DV film, and in fact has a slight advanage since ALL of the horizontal resolution is preserved.
I recently purchased a Sony HDR-HC1 for shooting short films for small festivals and online distribution.
I hope all this makes sense and I'd love to hear what anyone thinks of this technique. It seems almost to easy so I'm a bit worried to jump into a big project using this method. If it doesn't pan out, the 30fps shutter speed will render the raw footage useless.
Thanks,
Adam
