Other than lower data rate?

I shot some clip to test dv50 and 1080i50 against my dvx. I was mostly interested in Standard definition for an upcoming project to be broadcasted. A lot of people says if you need sd dv shoot sd dv. Better than having your footage manipulated/interpolated from square 1440x1080 to rectangular 720x576 (PAL).
I scaled all of my clips on a dv sequence in fcp and zoomed 600%. Wow!
Not zoomed, however, 1080i downconverted looks soft (on my mid-level PVM14L1) even if nicely "densier". Not tried yet to downconvert 1080i to a more robust format than dv, like dv50 or digibeta, but it looks like it's the way to go when looking, as I am, for better than dv footage, small camera, and releasing for broadcast SD: Shoot and edit dvcproHD, downconvert to dvcpro50, go out to a post facilty for print to tape.
dv50 unfortunately I think doesn't make so much sense to me, since I want "widescreen look" but SD TV it's 4/3...
I would have to use only the middle part of the 16/9 sensor and then losing another 25% letterboxing my 4/3 frame.
I would like to hear thougts on that.
Sorry for my english and thanks
Alvise

Can I post those jpeg grabs? How?

Why would you letterbox? Shoot in widescreen, and broadcast in widescreen. There will be horizontal black bars, but as you say, you will have more resolution. If you do a DVD release, you can make an anamorphic DVD that will play full screen on a widescreen TV, or automatically letterbox (with horizontal black bars again) on a 4:3 TV. Seems like the best option to me.

Even if you absolutely hate the idea of black bars, I would still shoot in widescreen, and then crop. Even though you lose resolution for now, you would be able to re-broadcast later in full 16:9 if you so choose.

For SD, DVCPRO50 is your best choice. But if you ever want to display in HD, shoot in DVCPROHD.

you're saying better to give an anamorphic master to broadcaster and let them provide proper letterboxed 4/3 framing?

For JPEGs, use http://www.imageshack.us Upload your picture there, and then post the last link you get there (direct link to your uploaded image) here.
