With my next project only 2 months away, I soon have to order my next cam. Probably the HVX.

I followed all the threads complaining about bad low-light sensivity and noi..., ahem, grain :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) and that it is a non-issue when having adequate lighting. That's good to hear.

My next movie is going to be extremely low-key. Less important parts of the image will go almost black - on purpose. Having enough light for the important parts is no problem at all, I could easily put the gain to a negative value if this would get me somewhere.

Question: What do you guys think would happen to very dark areas of my image (remember, I'd even use negative gain ). Would these areas still "suffer" from, uhm, irregularities (<-afraid of saying the n-word)? If yes, why? Is it impossible to get rich, black areas without nnnnnnoiiiassssmmmnn**!!??$$ with the HVX? Is the HVX a high-key-only camera?

[I]BTW: For all Germ(an)s: Heisinger Heicom is offering the HVX for 4999 Euros plus tax! Great price... See current "Kameramann"-issue. It's a one-man company but he's a nice guy. I bought my DVX from him.

HVX on the left, Sony on the right.

You can see the video version at:

and the Mirage/Volcano stuff at:

The goal with these clips was to see if I could get rich deep blacks on the HVX. I think it passed with flying colors.

Barry,

To quote Spinal Tap, "There is none more black". :)

Did you tweak it in post or is that straight out of the camera?

What settings did you use to get it the black so clean?

Thanks,

Chris

What's that wmvx extension? Is the 'x' significant? I deleted it and it played fine.

Wow, great, that looks promising, thanks!

wmvx: x is not important at all. You can rename it to .doh and it would play just fine if the associated proggie is any media player. DirectShow renders the actual file and disregards the extension to find the appropriate codec.
