I personally use Maya, but Cinema 4D is a popular alternative. A lof of people use it because it's learning curve is not as steep as Maya's. It really all depends on what you want to do...if you're trying to get into the industry, then Maya, otherwise, whatever you see fit.

not a huge difference, but... it's $2000 for complete and $7000 for unlimited.
lightwave and the others come in closer to $1000, if i'm not mistaken.
if you are a starter, you should try a cheaper and easier than Maya, or C4D

as i just download the demo.
Maya is something beyond my bugdet right now.
any software that you will recommend that is within a range of 1k us.
or less than sgd 1.5k. Cinema 4D is quite close to what i am looking.
just a bit sad, that the distributor in singapore are not as helpful.

They also probably used Cinema 4d, a host of proprietary tools, XSI, Max and Houdini at some point, which doesn't say anything about whether or not those tools are right for you.
I get nervous when people say one 3d package is "best". It's such a relative term, which doesn't take into account what it is you need to do.
That being said, Maya is a pretty safe bet, and if you're on the apple platform it's one of your only options. Seeing as its educational copy costs about the same as Cinema 4d I don't really see a reason to go any other direction on the mac.
oh, ye! maya has a free maya ple (personal learning edition)

I would head over to CGtalk.com Check out their lightwave forum. I would almost guarantee you they have a lightwave tutorial sticky.

If you are really serious about 3d get Maya or Lightwave. If you are just getting started and aren't ready to bit the bullet for something you may decide that you don't like then try Blender3D.
It's a free open source program that can do most things Lightwave can do, but doesn't have all the "frills". There are loads of tutorials for it. If you are wanting to do advanced hollywood quality stuff then pay for something better, but if you have the slightest hesitation try blender (which runs on every GUI Operating System known to man). If you decide you hate 3d then you lose nothing, if you decide that you want more punch after a few months then pay for something...
I started on Maya back on sgi boxes, then moved to Lightwave. Lately though i've really (really) been using C4D alot (the studio bundle). Its integration with after effects is better than anything out there. If you're into mograph work, definitely a top contender.

Lightwave is great and they have just reduced the price quite a bit. I think you can get a package that includes Vue Infinite which has an easier learning curve and is a good starting point.
