View Full Version : HVX200 weird clunking noise on brand new camera

Just bought a HVX200. Taking it out of box all seemed fine, but after charging battery and putting battery on and playing in the menus for half an hour, then finally switching it off I noticed something strange.
I turned camera off altogether, went to put the lens cap on, and that's when I noticed a little quiet clunking sound as I tilted the camera up to put the lens cap on, then when I had put the cap on, when I tilted the camera down I heard the clunking sound again.
If I hold the camera out and gently tilt it up and down it is like there is a small plastic ball-bearing rolling up and down in the front part of the camera. When I take the lens cap off, the clunking sound is brighter, with the cap on, it is more muted.
When I turn the camera on, the sound vanishes, well almost, I can hear a slight noise, but this one resembes a tiny bit of metal, like a pin head ratling up and down as I tilt. When I turn off, it goes back to a very noticable clunking sound?
What is this, or is mine faulty; I'm a bit concerned after just spending £4,200 on it?
Can you HVX200 owners take your camera out and tilt it up and down (as if on a tripod, only hand held) and let me know if you can hear anything.

Sounds like the optical images stabilizer or something; not good anyway. Do you still get a very quiet (pin head) metalic noise when you switch it on? you have to listen hard for it but I'm sure built in mic could pic it up.

Sounds to me like you got a bad one...Just kidding, I don't think we need to start another one of these threads. You're camera is fine, all of the HVX's make that sound as well as the DVX. Happy shooting!

Guys,
Don't stress and don't send you camera in. The clunk is normal. Take a closer look at your manual and this link...

Just be glad I got to you before someone tried to convince you that your camera was infected with the Ebola virus! :)
Enjoy your new HVX's with the warm fuzzy feeling that Panasonic actually gave you a "clunker" on purpose.

;) out of curiosity, what is it, does anybody know? and why does it go when powered on? I read the link with the copy from the instruction manual page, but Panny don't give a technical answer, just a "This is normal" answer.
What a relief though. Thanks guys.

The good ol clunking noise....
Man that gave me some trouble back in the day! ha!
They should have something on the box that says its normal so people don't get all loco on their dealers right away:violent5:

Optical Image Stabilization...read the whole manual, it should be in there

Hi,
As my experience, this happends to all cameras with Image stabilizers when you turn it on.
I have 3 Panasonic DVX100 (100. A and B) and all of them do the same, no problem at all
Now I get the AG HVX200 and it does the same, work fine, no problem.
Do not send the camera anywhere if it is working fine. period.

it is the optical image stabilizer, the reason there is a clunk is because the
optical image stabilzier is a mechnical thingy that has moving parts - that's how it stabilizes, it has to be able to float around and absorb shock, unlike digital image stabilizers which just blow the image up slightly in camera and float the blown up image, this is correcting before the camera captures the image. I guess not all optical image stabilizers make a clunk, my canon single chip with optical stabilization doesn't, but if you think about what it's trying to accomplish, the clunk, which means something is moving as you move your camera, makes sense.

Lies
It is an XL-318 Stabilzing problem. This is why it clunks. It is not secured properly. You're bummed.
