I'd like to mess around in Premiere. I want to import some footage in Premiere from my DVDs.
How is this done?

If the DVDs are not protected and your personal home movies or shorts that you made, any ripping software will work, and render it to an ultra compressed video cd format. ProCoder will render the VOB into DV or MPEG2 right off of the DVD. If they are protected, you would have to rip the DVD with pirating software wich is illegal and I don't think that it can be discussed on this website.

i would like to know how to do this too. my reasons having nothing to do with "illegal" activity. I'd just like to practice cutting trailers from movies. It would be nice if I knew how to extract the dvd video in order to use it in premiere.

Try ProCoder if you have it. It will rip many older DVDs to DV without much of a problem. For newer DVD get a pluggin for any ripper (worksbetter with ProCoder) plugin called Any DVD (if i remember correctly, its been a while since I tried this) you will know it has a fox symbol on it.

DVD Decrypter which has long since stopped production. It's freeware which you can still find on the internet. It's not a piracy issue if he's backing up something that he already has and the video he is using it in is strictly for personal use and nothing commercial. After ripping it with DVD Decrypter, you must encode it for it to fluidly run in Premiere (from a .vob or .mpeg file, make it an .avi file).
If any of this breaks any forum rules, I will edit my post.
