It's a VERY nice camera. I've got large hands, so I like the extra weight. I'm shooting wiht a Tamron 35-300mm zoom, and it's been working out very nicely.

Get the 18-200mm VR lens and that should take care of most of your needs.

Get a 50mm lens and learn to use that. It won't cost much and you'll learn more than you would with a more expensive, lower quality large spread zoom anyway.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll make sure to look into your suggestions on the lenses. If the budget fits... maybe I'll get both lenses!

Good wide lens for the D70:

AF Zoom Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED-IF

This one lists for about $500, but I found a nice one one ebay for under $400. (on the D70 it's equivalent to about a 27mm at the wide end).

This isn't as fast as the $1200 version, but its optics are definitely sharp enough for pro use... I've used it for commercial work.

Y'know, if you want an affordable wide lens, there are good deals for Nikkors in the 20mm range. You can even use really old non-AIS lenses on your D70; you won't have AF, exposure control, or metering, so you'll need a light meter (or just keep guessing exposure at a small JPEG size, then switch to NEF when the exposure looks good on the LCD). You'll also have to control the aperture with the lens ring; it's just like shooting with a film camera for the most part. There's a ton of Nikon glass on Ebay and at KEH.com.

Okay go buy this one. It's what you need. Super cheap.

It's not actually even as hard as that. You just turn on the histogram, fire off 2-3 sample shots, and then you know where to adjust to. I do it all the time with some of the old lenses I have.

As for the 18-35mm... I don't know if I buy that argument. Mostly, I would never again own a lens that slow (unless it was a super-telephoto or something where I had no choice). The last time I did, I ended up shooting a lot of 1600 speed film, and not necessarily because I wanted to.
