If I finish editing a project, in either, 1080 or 480 / (SD or HD) widescreen, and I want the video playable on a 16x9 tv in widescreen format or letterboxed on a 4x3 tv, dvd player settings aside, what do I export the video as in terms of pixel aspect ratio? Do I export it as 0.9 square pixels? Or widescreen? Or animorphic? Do I always export with the pixel ratio that I shot in?

So if I shoot 1440x1080. I should export as animorphic widescreen, even though it wil look streched on my monitor, since the pixels are rectangular and my monitor is sqaure pixels right?

Are 4:3 tvs pixels sqaure and 16:9 tvs rectangular?

I take it that 1440x1080 hdv is still a little different ratio than DV 720 x 480 widescreen ratio?

What about having hd widescreen display on a sd widescreen tv?

True HD rez is square pixel, but HDV (1440) is 3/4 of 1920, so its pixel ratio is 1.3333 for a 16:9 export. SD (NTCS) has a .9091 aspect ratio when shot in 4:3 and 1.2121 ratio when shot in 16:9. Either way, if you are going to DVD, you are ending up with a 16:9 aspect ratio if you want a wide screen DVD. If you shot in HD, you shouldn't need to change any aspect ratios since it was already shot that way. That is true that if your editor or video player does not know its in 16:9 SD, it will play stretched, but any DVD player (and some media players) will know and display properly.

A true HD signal wouldn't play on an SD screen, it would have to be converted and would typically be done with letterboxing or cropping of the sides.
