View Full Version : Firestore FS-100 and 720 PN recording

Seeing as the native (720 PN) recording mode of the HVX is not sent directly down the FW pipe like the other recording formats, it seems the best workflow involving the FS-100 is to have one 4GB or 8GB P2 card to use when needing to shoot PN shots and use the FS-100 as the offload drive for this card when its full.
In all the other recoding modes the FS-100 has it covered.
Not that I can do anything with the 720 25PN recordings as no NLE supports this anyway :-)
Thanks

Another way to look at this though is that if the NLE software companies are able to offer full support for the PAL HVX200E and include methods of resolving the frames from 720 25P vari-speed recordings (the non native method which will travel down the FW pipe to the FS-100) in the NLE, then the P2 card can be avoided all together.

With RayLight, *every* NLE supports it. Go to www.dvfilm.com/raylight (http://www.dvfilm.com/raylight)

Thanks Barry. I tested Raylight out the other day. My initial impression was that it was a little clunky workflow wise, but I need to spend more time with it to really find out.
I also wasn't aware that it supported 720 25p yet, I thought it only had 1080 25/50 support - thats great if they now support all the PAL cameras HD formats.
Thanks

I now feel like waiting for the Cineporter... More waiting....

I think initially wait for NAB (two days!) and then see how the land lies after that. My feeling is that not much will change in this storage area for a while, but more importantly the NLE market needs to change to make it possible to actually use this material (Raylight aside).
The Cineporter looks great, but he impression I get from the developer is that its a while away - perhaps July.
The Firestore is pricey, but likely to be a solid product as the company behind it has plenty of experience and good products behind them. Its available now so is the only real option.
There is also another product I saw mentioned in another thread called CitiDisk HD:
http://www.shining.com/products/totalsolution/citidisk_hd/
People have suggested the company behind this have a checkered past, but hopefully it will be out soon and some reviews will let us know.

The problem with the Firestore is not being able to overcrank/undercrank in a native format. I know I can do it in post, but it's more hassle.
I feel like waiting for the Cineporter. I'll have a look at the Citidisk though.

Anyone else know much about the Citidisk, e.g. features & limitations?

What is NAB?
Really? Its the biggest industry trade show in the world - held in Las Vegas each year its traditionally a time when hundreds of new products are previewed or introduced:

Can Raylight do Firewire capture? If yes, what modes? Native?

No Raylight is a small app which takes an existing MXF file and creates an AVI reference clip which can then be used in an NLE. It has no capture ability.

DOH! Good point. I should have said "with raylight every NLE supports the MXF files."
Raylight doesn't add firewire capture capability. If Serious Magic builds our oft-nagged-for HD Rack program, it would provide firewire capture for any NLE.
