Just wondering if it is possible in a PC environment to actually write a movie or similar file back to the p2 card by dragging and dropping it to the card icon while mounted on the computer?
I know it can't be done with a Mac and FCP, but is this at least theoritically possible?

Well, yes, but you have to specify what you're doing. You can drag and drop anything to the card; WinXP just sees it as a 4gb (or 8gb) external hard disk. I've copied word processor and .exe files on it before for transporting between two computers.
But if you want to put a movie file on there, um, for what purpose? To transport somewhere? Or to play back in-camera? If it's to play back in-camera it'll have to be built into proper MXF format, and FCP doesn't do that.
I guess if you got a .mov-to-.mxf conversion program that split it up into the individual essence MXF files, then you could copy it back to the card and have it play.

Barry, is there a program for Mac that can convert Quicktime files to MXF. Or is that something still waiting in the wings.

Bingo, that's what I am looking for.
So, none on the Mac so far?? Correct?
And none on the PC so far? Correct as well?
It certainly would save time previewing for clients

Okay, thought I'd revive a 2 year old thread to ask....
Is there a good way to take .mov files and convert them to .mxf files on a Mac that can be played back off a P2 card on the HVX?
Looks like this would work for the PC side:
http://www.focusinfo.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=213
"In DVCPRO HD mode, convert to and from P2 MXF, QuickTime, AVI and RawDV "
But I haven't seen anything for Macs.

You can do that using Edius. Just drop the MOV file (even DVCProHD) into a sequence and use Print To File -> HD P2 Clip. Edius will span cards as needed, and you can also just output to your hard drive and handle the copying to P2 cards yourself.
You should also be able to dub it through Firewire and let the camera worry about the recording details.

I'm using FCP.
Though I don't really care if I can do the export via the NLE itself or not.
Just looking for something Mac based that can make the needed conversion.

Dubbing through Firewire should work for you.

Raylight. It has a "P2 Maker" function.

Perfect.
That would be much handier than dubbing via firewire.
That feels a bit too much like using tape to me.

You can do that with Premiere CS3 as well. Import the file into the timeline and export at Panasonic P2.

So, you cannot export back to a P2 card from FCP? Sorry i'm an Edius user and i always assumed it can be done. If it can be done with FCP, can someone please explain the process. Thanks

You can play out to the camera via firewire and record in-camera.

FCP has no provision for making MXF files. So you have pretty much two choices:
1) do as David said, and "print to tape" through the firewire port and have the HVX capture the incoming data stream. This only works if you have an HVX though; if you're using a Duel Adapter or a PCD20 slot reader, it's not gonna work.
2) use Raylight's P2 Maker software to turn a DVCPRO-HD Quicktime file into a P2-compatible MXF structure. At least, I think there's a Mac version of that...
