Interesting that the countdown clock puts their big reveal on April 20 - four days before the NAB exhibits open.

Ah, now I see it! Drool... I hope it can do what it claims it can do, because, well, it will truly be a revolution! I don't think I've ever been this eager for NAB to arrive!

Just don't remind when Red will be available, remember somethin' about at the end of the year...(sure it's already been discussed, sorry, but I'd want official words of Jannard) Maybe will be available two months after Nab? Have your staff already made a Pal version too, or we must wait here in Italy? Jim Jannard please reply! Thanks!

They're actually going to have a prototype of this? wow.

jrv3034
04-12-2006, 05:07 PM
They said there will NOT be a working prototype at NAB. Only a non-working mock-up. They also said their goal is end of the year shipping.

Jannard
04-12-2006, 08:41 PM
Correct... although this is not your everyday cardboard mock-up. We actually have lots to show and I'll be very surprised if anyone is disappointed. If I am wrong, I am sure I'll hear about it.

Thanks Jim! :)
But...about Pal and Ntsc model, d'you think to make an universal model?
Ya know, delay issues about different models are very annoying!:(
I'm sure you think the same! :)

HD is NTSC/PAL independent? It's all progressive video as far as I understand it. So it should be one camera for all.

there isnt a good reason not too.. while of course besides the hz of the chips :)

Jim

I know a few people that will be disappointed.. off the top of my head?

Mr. Sony isnt gonna be very happy.. Mr. Canon is gonna have a fit, and Mr. JVC is not going to be impressed. :furious3:

Mr Panasonic is going to be bitter.

Go ahead Jim; shake thing's up for us filmmakers!

I can imagine the 30 second commercial now...

Hey Jim how do you beta test something like this? Do you give it to a bunch of cinematographers and say "hey you go shoot something in the artic and you go shoot something in the desert"?

How does that work?

And, more importantly, can I test one?

It rains a lot over here in the UK and we have "extreme" grey skies at times, so I'm sure your camera will need a thorough workout in our difficult climate before it can be safely passed as fit for general use.

the beta program is very easy to get into. You give RED your credit card number, they take a little "administration" fee and they give you the camera to do whatever you want with. :)

So it will record 25p and 50p? Man, that would be GREAT.

I think Jim's stated somewhere that the camera will do 1-60fps at 4k. Which means (I assume) you just dial in the frame-rate you want and, hey presto, the thing just works. Which is why Jim is saying it's a "world camera" - you can literally just run it at the correct frame rate for your country/outlet/project as you would with, say, an Arri film camera.

The only issue that would require country-specific attention would be, I guess, to do with power. If you were to run the camera off the mains (if that's even a possibility) then it would have to be compatible with the country it's in. But that shouldn't be an issue and I suspect it's gonna be a mainly (if not exclusively) battery-operated camera anyway.

The guy's got charisma. He's already a POP icon in the digital-video-camera-geek community...
