Donīt use AE for that effect ,a 3D effect is better, Maya is the best programe for that. www.Autodesk.com

It depends on what you want this meteor to do...if you just want it to fly across the sky as if it's coming into the earth's atmosphere and burning up, you could do something like that with particle effects (smoke, fire, etc.)...if you want something like Armageddon where you're flying across the surface of a meteor or something like that, then a 3D program would be best...

Yeah, check out either Trapcode's Particular or wondertouch's Particle Illusion. Particle Illusion might be better for this, it's a standalone app though.

MAYA is Hollywood

Well, actually...Hollywood is Hollywood :)

While Maya is used a lot, there are other programs that will work well in certain situations. Lightwave is used a lot in television and Cinema 4D is becoming the program of choice for motion graphics artists that need to bring 3D elements into After Effects.

Maya is great, but there are other choices for people who don't have a strong 3D skill set or don't have the money to buy Maya.

Ok Thatīs richt rightfrog, Maya cost a lot money and not every one can buy Maya,
3ds max is ok and lichtwave to.
I use After FX and it is a good program for composeting and special fx.
Can you do it in AE you do it in AE and you can use Maya ,3Ds Max lichtwave
for more foto realistic things

What effect EXACTLY are you trying to get? Knowing that would help get you info.

Ask a 3D artist to do it... you offer a 'live action' proect that anyone desperate
to break in to the Hollywood vfx world needs on their reels. Be humble about it
though, in the end, they are doing you the larger favor.

That's a neat tut. I use Lightwave, and After Effects, so it will be neat to see what these guys get once they incorporate them both.

I took a look at a few of them and there are some basic techniques that can
be gleaned, but he's got a lot a bad habits just from looking at a few of em.

He's got a tendency to 'paint into a corner' with little room to make overall
changes w/o having to re-do work thats dependent on decisions made much
further upstream.

Yes I think Stephens site is more aimed at the beginner to intermidiate after effects user but i'm sure some people would benifit from these tutorials.
