View Full Version : 35mm adapters reference list
guys, i know weve all been following these adapters for a while and im started to get lost and confused and mixe mashed between them all.
I want to compile a list of ALL the adpaters, either manufactured or DIY's in order of price, if they use a rail system, followed by a demo video link.
Will anyone be brave enough to stand up to this challenge with me?
Adapters:
G35
SG35
Brevis35
Micro35
Mini35
HD35
Ifocus35
Letus35
LetusFlip
go35
MPIC
Indie35
Movietube
My35
ill put them in price order later on, first i want to finish the list of them all, then work around to getting all of their prices, then fnish by finding clips of them all in use with the dvx100.(a or b ) whichever.
shit.. i thought alot more people who care to have one thread with all the adapters sorted by price and a demo shot of each. Especially for those who are being lost with the 100's now being made. Someone, common, give a lending hand to a great cause!!!!!

Dude, I'll help out. You've got the indie35 (http://www.indie35.com/) and the Movietube (http://www.movietube.com/index2.php). There's the my35, kind of. I think Mike is still selling them but I'm not sure. If you need help further down the road let me know. I was actually starting to put together a sort of timeline of adapter developments, just as a sort of history of the adapter movement. I know I'm new to the scene so it would take me a while because I'd have to research who did what. But it seems like most of the people who have been working on this for a long time are still here. I was also hoping to someday make a more detailed explanation of the 35mm adapter concept, explaining what each part does so that n00bs could get a better idea of how they all work. Ambitious, and I have no time to do it, but why not dream?

Once again heres some footage I shot with the letusflip. Please note I stuffed the lense into some plants without realising and have some dirt particles on the lense.. sorry, you can still see the shots.
http://www.scarlet-films.com/flipit.wmv
All shots taken outside, using a circular polariser. I will have some shots soon, of some indoor stuff using lights (once the artist gives me permission to use the shots for my website), these look pretty nice.
As an additional note: before I shot this Iwas getting pretty bad noise in my image. Wondering why as it seemed the noise levels were worse than I had seen them? I changed the batteries on the unit to the vibrating ground glass and it was great... so make sure you always are using charged batteries.
k so here is what we got so far
anything else outthere?
( next step will be to get prices and links to all the items. )

the Vibrating GG one, isnt built yet so no idea probably somehwere around 800$ (guestimate)

The G35 is $1,000, plus $150 for DVX or HVX mount plus $150 for Nikon mount,
$1300 total. new version will have vibrating GG, for use with HD cameras.
Redrock M2 is $1,000. for the "Indie kit" which includes adapter, lens & camera mounts, and 15mm rods.
Making this list is a great idea. :)
Papa, are You planning all that put somewere in the web?
theres additional features i'd like to see in that list:
1. static/moving/vibrating
2. GG material
3. tube material(s)
4. compatible cameras (filter threads)
5. compatible lens (bayonets, threads)
6. filp: yes/no (so far only letus??)
7. specific footage:
a) fisheye lens
b) low-light condition
c) closed-down irissize (8-22)
e) shot against bright spotlight
8. approximate lightloss
9. accoutic noise level
10. power supply characteristics (V,A)
care to give me a hand? sweet!

I love this thread. The resulting summary will be widely used/referred to, though I expect it will probably change WEEKLY. I just wanted to add that the micro35 is now called the M2. I'm sure you guys know that...but for many of us confused by the wide range of products and product names, it will be helpful to clarify that the micro35 is the same thing as the M2.

Nice thread,
I will be posting up final pictures of the SGpro rig very soon (in the next week or so).
Footage is to follow from the DVX100, FX-1 and XL2. Nick Bartleet ( http://www.pixelloft.com/ ) will be using the SGpro on one of his upcoming music videos, hooked up to a Z-1 (FX-1).

this thread does have potential, but im only now realizing how difficult it will be to get all this info alone.
but if everyone would take one of the adapters not yet found and post the things for it, ill put it all togehter in a nice order then it will be an official comparison of the adapters for all to stop searching through thread after thread looking for the adapter for them

Go35 went from $209, to 500^. Howd that happen?
bklyndv
04-16-2006, 10:54 PM
There are THREE Go35 models. Taken from the FAQ I'm prep'ing:
Go35 SD
Price: $209
Format: NTSC/PAL DV
This static adapter is made with a propietary high quality hand-ground glass. It is an entry level adapter aimed at experimental filmmakers, students or video hobbyists looking to add a new dimension to their productions, without the hassle of DIY or the higher expense of other adapters. The grain structure and light loss of this adapter are not suited for the most demanding professional users, but instead will create an interesting aesthetic for your footage.
http://go-35.com/vids/shallowDOF.mov
Go35 Pro
Price: around $600
Format: NTSC/PAL DV, some HDV cameras
Also static, this adapter utilises a proprietary “near grainless” focusing screen to achieve unparalleled image quality rivalling the look of more expensive adapters, static and moving. For examples of this adapter in action, click the following links for high quality h.264 QuickTime clips:
http://go-35/vids/outside1-h264-2pass.mov
http://go-35/vids/outside2-h264-2pass.mov
http://go-35/vids/outside3-h264-2pass.mov
http://go-35/vids/macroplay-h264-2pass.mov
Go35 HD
Format: All
Price: around $750
This adapter meets the highest optical standards possible by moving the focusing screen in a random nature. Powered by rechargable NiMH cells, the adapter has long run times with each charge and the batteries can be switched out for pre-charged cells easily. Built around Academy Gate framing, the adapter has aspect markings to aid shooters looking to get the ideal frame dimensions. Currently in development, a working model of this adapter is expected in the first week of May, 2006.

very well, that explains it.
I wish someone could do a nice shootout with most bought adapters, from Letus, to Go35, to Brevis, to M2, Sg35, its really hard to choose one now adays. Its like a wedding dress for a woman, so many out there, but which one really 'suits' her, and she'll never know until she tries it.

im considering getting a 35 adapter (still undecided which one - i had no idea there were so many until i saw this post!), but would also like to use a follow focus system. do you think the indifocus system would work with one/any of these adapters, since it seems to be more universal than other FF systems?
just a thought!
p.s. thanks for starting the thread PaPa!

didnt seem to have a great review on the indie focus.
but in terms of this thread, well im actually off to prague in a few minutes for aw eek! So ill have some nice footage for when im back but in the mean time i wont be doing any updating to the list. I have not abandoned it but i do need help with the list. So check back soon!

very well, fair enough. two more questions:
what is 'flip?' im really considering the indie35, which, according to this thread has no flip. should I instead look at the letus flip?
second, on the indie35 website it says, " All cameras with MFD of less that 100mm mount straight onto the Indie35 adapter. If the MFD of Your camera is more than that (as in DVX100, for example), You will need a third party diopter lens in-between the camera and Indie35."
-I am confused, I have a dvx100, so does that mean I must get a third party diopter? if so, any suggestions?
thanks again in advance!
and have fun in prague PaPa!

indie35 doesnt have flip. As far as i know they plan it to the next product.

This page says that 5.4mm - 54mm(depends of zoom). I'm little confused too. Because if given site is right then indie35 should have typo there... or opposite.

This is great! I was just about to post a question somewhere when I decided to take the advice most often given in such situations ... "do a search first." I am a beginner to professional level videography and mostly do weddings and other events. My questions were going to be ... "would a 35mm adapter be appropriate/useful to such videography?" and "what is a good lens/adapter starter kit?" Perhaps you could add to this thread, which should eventually become a sticky, suggestions for which situations/budgets/scenarios each adapter/lens would be most appropriate. Sort of like the sticky someone did on shotgun mics awhile back.
Thanks Papa!
By the way, I'd be more than happy to help out with this if I had any inkling of what to look for. I'm afraid I don't know enough about this to even research correctly. Of course, if someone wants to simply assign me a lens/adapter and tell me what specs to look for, I will be happy to do so.

Is it for sale?
My questions were going to be ... "would a 35mm adapter be appropriate/useful to such videography?" and "what is a good lens/adapter starter kit?"
Yes and No. Depends mostly on yourself. I have used shDOF adapter couple times by producing documentary(or documentary-like) as well. And certainly it is interersting and full of fun oportunity to have focus under your precise control. And it's very easy to produce Lars von Trier - like picture. Wich is very cool. The question is by all that is it the thing(in this genre - event and wedding) what Your customer expects.
