I remember reading a thread that discussed this, but lost track of it. Can the HVX record 720p straight out through the firewire to a portable Firewire dirve, or do you need to go through an editing system or controller like a laptop to the Drive.

Also, any updates on when the Firestore device will be out, will it be released before may?
Lets say I am filming for hours on location, is it possible/feasable to offload the firestore during a break in production and download/transfer to a external firewire drive without a laptop to continue shooting on the Firestore? How Long would this take to offload? I am really needing to get all of this worked out for a production overseas.

You can't record from the firewire to an external hard drive without a laptop. You can shoot onto P2 cards, and then dump the data to a hard drive (which is called "host mode"). The problem with this solution is that you can't be filming with your camera while you do this (you have to switch out of camera mode).

I am not sure if the Firestore has it's own "host mode" where it can dump it's contents to another external hard drive without the aid of a laptop. I can tell you that transfer times will probably be comparable to P2 Store transfer times which is roughly 1GB a minute.

Firestore will be out soon. People are saying they could be popping up in Europe as soon as this week. I believe Europe is getting them first, and then the rest of the world later.

I hope this helps. Also, there are several threads on here that cover everything you wanted to know. Do a little more searching and you can find even more in-depth info on these topics.
