Ok so obviously the onboard mic on the hvx isnt the greatest...i think we can all agree. So i was wondering what are some not so expensive options on some xlr mics? thanks for the help! alway appreciated

I had an Azden, but it suddenly died so I switched to the ME-66.

We have all the attachments for the Sennheiser ME series. They are a great tool and very respected in the industry.
Plus a wireless Sennheiser and a Lecrosonics.
I'll have to find a new way to attach the receivers to the HVX. We had velcro hold both of the receivers to the back of our Beta.

Zip ties over the top handle....not the greatest, but it works.

I put velcro around the shaft of the eyepiece. you can stick a receiver on each side.

I love my Audio Technica 4073a. Everyone always comments on how good the sound is on my productions. It's terific in smaller interiors, and does well outdoors --- so long as you've got a good blimp on it.

If you frequent the audio section of this site you will know there's no mic that works well indoors and out.

For outside I use a Sennheiser 416, also Countryman B6 lavs on Lectrosonics wireless. Inside I am still looking for a Schoeps CMC6 with MK41 Capsule, cheap. No luck so far!!

Sanken CS-1, Not very expensiv. Ok as "on camera mic". Ok indoors. Very good outdors.
A good "allround" mic.

The senheisser MKH-416 is probably the most widely used shotgun mic. All of my sound friends have at least one in their arsenal. It's a little more expensive than the ME series but delivers a better sound. IMO

4073a, best mic under $1500! By a mile.

Gee, I guess I'll trust the audio section more than the twenty five years I've spent recording, being a musician, training my ear, and the years of indoor/outdoor experience with 4073a.

To my ear, the 4073a is the AKG414 of the short/medium shotgun world --- a killer mic that performs well in almost all circumstances and should cost two to three times what you'll pay for it. I'm with Evinsky on this one --- by a mile!

I like the AT 835 Stereo M/S mike. Great to use for mono recording and awesome for stereo stuff. Small and it fits nicely into the HVX mike holder. A great mike for 500 bucks...

I do also love the 416 and the Sankens are great.. but kind of pricey. I'm hoping that someone can figure out a way to bypass the camera mike to take advantage of the 4 channells of audio recording.

Would be awesome to have two wireless mikes... A camera mike and a mike on a Boom... Now that would rock... but would recquire some monitoring.. and I'm sure it would void the warranty.. lol

The MKH-60 is very versatile, a big if not huge improvement from the 416. I've also heard great sound from the Neumanns. The 4073 is a good value.

For lavs, my fav is the Sanken cos-11s and will take them any day over a TR-50 or MKE-2.

I have the Audio Technica 4073a. it's awesome.. phantom powered and light weight and short for dv cameras... I've gone through 4 DV cameras, but I still have this shotgun mic...

***only thing is that the new mic holders on the hvx's do a poor job of holding 3rd party shotgun mics... including this one..
