Two Gigs would cost me about 400$ more on my notebook, so I'm wondering if it is really necessary. And is 5400 RPM enough, as drives can be too fast as somebody wrote? And how about the Graphic card, does an integrated solution do the job, do I need a 128 MB X1300 or a 256 MB X1400?

Well I would suggest 2GB RAM 256MB Graphic card and 7200rpm HD if you can afford it. I have mentioned my laptop specs many times, but here once again : cpu 3Ghz 2GB RAM nvidiaGeforceGo6800 256MB 2X5400rpmRAID0 with 2 external firewire 7200 rpm... and what I see working with EDIUS trial and some 720p MXF footage is that if I am planning to do serious editing an external G-RAID (hi Barry !) would be probablly a wize update PLUS a faster CPU, something like 3.8GHZ or I'll wait and see how windows vista works with dual core. You should hear the external Hard discks how they struggle when I have not rendered !

Yeah, but is a 128 MB card really necessary? And you are only talking about external drives, so I can keep the standard internal drive?

First of all you should download the trial version and chek it out yourself. There also compatibility issues with graphic cards and NLE. And as I said I would suggest 256 MB even if all those MB are suppose to be for 3D purposes. And one internal 7200rpm should be probably OK for system files only. 5400 should work also, but I beleive that you are asking for trouble if you dont go with 7200. Try for your self, there are indeed many other issues, many of them have to do with the overall quality of your laptop.

I would say 768 MB would be minimum, especially for notebooks. If you're planning to edit HD stuff, then you'll need more RAM for the realtime buffer, so 1 GB would be minimum there.

As Andreas recommends, give it a try on your laptop, then buy more hardware if you need/want to.
