Hi.
I've never used Edius and wasn't able to find the answer to this question anywhere so far....
Does Edius Broadcast support multi-camera editing?
Also, does the trascoding to Canopus codec hurt the video output compression compared to a program that supports DVC-Pro HD natively such as AVID?
Thanks,
Yuval.

Hi Yuval,
The upcoming version of Edius 4 should have multicamera support. You can do multi camera editing right now by stacking layers together and using the Picture in Picture filter (aka 2d Picture in Picture Keyer in Edius) and sync via flashes or sound slaps.
As for transcoding, if you are doing HDV you can either work with raw m2t files or convert to Canopus HQ codec (It takes more space but allows you to edit without using a super computer). The Canopus HQ codec is excellent, especially on SuperFine setting. It rivals HDCAM & DVCPRO quality at the same datarate.
If you're working with the HVX200 or any other DVCPROHD camera, then you can use Edius to capture to native mxf files (Only supported on Canopus Edius Broadcast) or you can grab the P2 plugin for $999 I think.

Thanks STORMDAVE.
So I understand that at this point in time there's no real support for multi-camera editing (Switching on the fly that is translated into the timeline), but there is a native support to the DVC-Pro HD codec for editing without any trascoding.
Did I get it right?
Also, is there any word out there about an estimated release date of EDIOUS 4?
Price of "Edius 3 - Broadcast"?
Thanks,
Yuval.

Hi Yuval,
We had a great volleyball player named Yuval Katz when I was in college. Anyway...
Currently EDIUS has no dedicated multi-camera feature. You can, however, do as many folks do and use either the Layout or Picture-in-Picture function on clips in multiple lines, then cut across and move the selected clip to a "use" line.
The Canopus HQ codec is designed to preserve quality, so its resolution and sampling is actually better than both DVCPRO HD and HDCAM. Thus, while there is a transcode involved, it's more like putting the same bits into a bigger bucket versus throwing bits away.

Hi Yuval,
Yes there needs to be no transcoding if you're working with DVCPRO50/DVCPROHD formats in Edius, just drag the clips in there and it works in real time.
There is no info on Edius 4, but NAB2006 might give us SOME info on it.

Heres more info on Edius Broadcast.
The price is around $900 I think at safe harbor.

Thanks StormDave for clarifying - looking back, my post was confusing wrt transcoding.
DVCPRO HD footage can be used natively in the timeline without conversion. In fact, everything that EDIUS supports can be used without forced conversion. Just some more complex formats like HDV, you probably want to convert to Canopus HQ for better realtime performance.
