Does anyone know the 35mm SLR equivalent of the zoom range of the lenses on the HVX and DVX? For example, is it 20mm-80mm?

Is that a typo? Does the lens really go all the way to 423mm? I never thought the telephoto on the cams were that powerful.

DVX is 32.5 to 325, HVX is 32.5 to 423. DVX is 10x range, HVX is 13x.

It's not about the lens, the lens is just 45 mm (DVX). But the sensors are that small compared to a 35mm frame, which gives you the zoom-range.
If you shoot some 1080p at full zoom, then crop the picture to SD-size in post, you get about 800mm equiv.. It's like the digital-zoom on those digital compact-cameras.

get the Panasonic FZ5 stillcameras and you will have a small, perfect director´s-viewer with its 35-420 zoom and you can show the crew what shot you have in mind on the LCD ..... ;-)
