I was wondering if we could start a section on the 1080 24p workflow.
I had a few questions:
1. You shoot in 1080 24p, but what do you put the NLE setting on?
2. Do I remove the pulldown when editing, or leave it interlaced?
3. Should I store the master with pulldown, or true frames?
4. What's the best monitor to use when playing/editing this large footage?
5. Who has experience to take this footage to film?
6. What NLE's are set up to edit this footage?
7. How would one downconvert to 720p?
8. How would one downconvert to 480p/24 DVD?
9. Since there are no HD format DVD's as of today, would it be advisable to store and go with Sonic's method of using Windows Media Video and putting it on standard DVD's? That is a now solution that plays on computers.
I think we are all going to have to deal with this and maybe we need a dedicated section for the 1080 24p that the HVX users will face.

I had a few questions:
1. You shoot in 1080 24p, but what do you put the NLE setting on?
In Vegas, using something like Raylight the setting
is HD 1080-24p (1920x1080, 23.976fps)
Raylight removes the 2:3:3:2 pulldown.
I don't know if Edius will edit 1080 24p yet,
I know FCP will not, even with Cinema Tools
it cannot remove the pulldown (yet) hope 6.0
will tackle this.
2. Do I remove the pulldown when editing, or leave it interlaced?
You have to remove the pulldown in you shoot 1080 24pA,
If you shot 1080 24p then you would probably be editing
in 1080 60i, I think.
3. Should I store the master with pulldown, or true frames?
Both
4. What's the best monitor to use when playing/editing this large footage?
A native 1080 screen, at least 1920x1080 pixels.
5. Who has experience to take this footage to film?
www.dvfilm.com
6. What NLE's are set up to edit this footage?
So far I have only tried Vegas and it works,
I can output a 1920x1080 WMV HD file.
7. How would one downconvert to 720p?
Set-up a 720p project and import your finished
1920x1080 file.
8. How would one downconvert to 480p/24 DVD?
Render out a .m2v sequence with the proper settings.
9. Since there are no HD format DVD's as of today, would it be advisable to store and go with Sonic's method of using Windows Media Video and putting it on standard DVD's? That is a now solution that plays on computers.
After you create a .m2v file it can be used with most DVD authoring apps.

1. FCP 5.1 now supports 1080/24pA mode.
And Edius supports 1080/24PA too.
2. FCP will remove pulldown upon importing the files. Edius doesn't have to, it removes pulldown on the fly. Raylight removes pulldown on capture.
6. FCP 5.1, Edius, and Vegas with Raylight

So in edius, I use 1080 24pa, or 1080 24p ?
Since I do not believe there is anything that plays either?
Which would I chose and why?
I am not positive, but I think sonic dv architecture HD will record some type of HD 1080 file in windows media onto regular DVD recordables.
I was told that they would only play on windows based computers, but it was a means of delivering HD footage to anyone with a computer of that display size.
I am still, however, confused as to which method would this display best as there are no progressive "standards" that I am aware of for 1080. Correct me if that is not the case.

Go look at this
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx
With the HVX-200 you can shoot and then edit with Edius, FCP
or Vegas (Raylight) and produce WMV HD files.
Until Blu-Ray or HD-DVD come out and I think FCP DVD SP
will support one or the other, then WMV HD is the best way to distribute your HD show. We are producing a Standard DVD and then putting the WMV HD file on it as well (Like Panasonic did for the HVX demo DVD)

Use Avid Xpress Pro HD. Copy the P2 cards as usual and import as DNxHD 145. Avid is still the best.
