Is it possible to shoot HD (720 or 1080) in 4:3 ratio natively, or do you have to do a work-around? (e.g. mask your monitor and then zoom + crop in post? Something better?)

You could mount an anamorphic adapter wich you rotate 90º :-)

Monolith, why would you want to shoot HD in 4:3? Just curious as it'll help me to form a better answer.

Client wanted delivery in 4:3 for web purposes, and isn't interested in letterboxing full res. DVCPRO50 it is. I pity the fool.

Heh, it's web...
1) Unless contricted by the design, aspect ratio doesn't matter, a window can be any aspect ratio nativly.
2) DVCPRO will be fine for online. Web delivery isn't even close to proper SD, let alone HD, for publications anyway.

I shoot 16:9 for 4:3 all the time. You do have to reduce the size of the image in post, but you also have the advantage of reframing your shots if they are a little off. Just use the 4:3 frame lines in your HVX.
