Anyone here know how to make an animated starfield like the one seen in star trek? the one where the stars are coming at the viewer? Any help would be great!

The Trapcode filter Particular has a very nice preset for that...
yeah, particles are the only solution, I can imagine.

You can create a small white circle and add a glow to it then dupe it a bunch of times and use expressions to drive the animation, but I think you would be better off getting Trapcode Particular...it's pretty cheap too!

I did it years ago as a test with a load of noise generated in photoshop adjusted levels and added blending modes to get a starfield. Took this into after effects and layerd it multiple times with screen blending mode then animted the z axis of each one slowly toward the cam (making them 3d layers of course) at diff rates and you got a pretty good starfiled on the cheap.:)
