i'm seriously considering some sort of 35mm lens adapter for my DVX, but i'm starting to read that because of the light loss, it's required to open the aperture as wide as possible.

well, the primary reason i want the adapter is because i want to use a variety of my canon lens's focal lengths...not because of the extremely shallow DOF i can obtain. so.. if i wanted to use my 17-40mm lens at 17mm for a very wide angle, but at a deep DOF like f/8 or f/11...would i be out of luck (i don't have access to a ton of lights, so i can just grab a bunch of 5ks or something..if that's what is necessary).

Well, the M2 adapter from Red Rock Micro has nearly no light loss (1/2 stop maybe?) But regardless, shooting at F8 or f11 is going to require additional lighting, even without an adapter. My recommendation, invest in some 500w Home Depot lights, and call it a day. You cant beat $9.99 for 500w of power, plus they are relatively warm tone!

You could also just get a Red Eye .5 wide-angle adapter; that would give you a wider field of view than the Canon 17mm lens and you'd have no light loss, no image softening, no added grain, none of the side effects of 35mm adapters.

It sounds like Barry isn't a fan of the 35mm adapters. I'm getting one made for me soon, and I'm getting more and more worried that it wasn't the best idea. I hope I can still get a deep DOF as well as a shallow one. I've read SO MUCH on them but in the end, you never know until you really use one on a shoot. Meh, if it doesnt work out, its only 250 bucks.

the red eye .5 and .7x sound nice..but i can't find any footage ANYWHERE using them, and there's no way i'm going to purchase a $350ish lens overseas without knowing how it performs.
