Hey,
In after effects 6.0 for the PC is there any way to preview work on an external monitor through the camera using firewire?
If anyone can give me a yay or a nay it'd be great.

You need an intermediary device that converts firewire to component/composite whatever you need. I use a Canopus advc100, works great, a lot of people use this device for all video purposes including editing, etc.
It retails for around $200-$300

Guess what you can use a great device that i bet you all have lying around your house (as im guesing its why your probably on the forum) its (drumroll) your camera. Hook it up via firewire run out from your composite outs to a video monitor and switch to vcr mode. In after effects go to prefs then set video out to firewire (NTSC or pal DV) then your good to go.

Firewire previews only work in version 6.5, not in 6.0. If you want monitor output for versions older than 6.5, you need to get a Decklink or Kona card for preview.
And a camera with firewire will work fine, you don't need any type of converter if you have a camera.

If you have a PC and own a video card that is capeable of doing full screen overlay draws to a secondary monitor (like all Geforce cards, or all ATI cards) then you could buy TVZEKA.
www.cyberzeka.com Some of the best money I have ever spent!
NO DV NEEDED!

While this works I personally don't like the idea of leaving my camera on for that long. Usually when I am working in AE it's hours and hours.

I have the parhelia card from matrox...the 128mb version. It will combine two computer monitors and a 3rd NTSC realtime output with a great WYSIWYG plugin. Coincidentaly, it also gives me realtime output with my Xpress Pro. Highly recommended with a price tag of about 350, i think.
