I have been looking around the net, but can't seem to find much on this topic. Soon I will be purchasing the M2 from Red Rock Micro, and will be using a set of 4-5 Canon FD lenses. I really want to use a mattebox but cant figure much out, seeing how the FD series lenses dont have front threads. Is their an adapter for this? Is their a mattebox solution to this problem? Any insight would be mucho appreciated.

My fd lenses all have front threads. I dont use a mattebox on mine (will make a small sunshade for it shortly) but I use a tiffen square filter holder with a step up ring and it works fine.

If you work this out........I want to see a picture of that! I built a mattebox for my 4x5 View Camera, they're really not that hard to build if you can't find a commercial one. I hope you plan on supporting that mess.......wow! I have enough to deal with just getting my DVX ready to roll when using my 35mm adapter.......don't even think of writing anything on this thread that's gonna make me want to throw a mattebox on it too :)

Redrock has a matte box coming out, but I don't know how soon. I have an M2 already, so I think I'll just wait for their box. After the follow focus, of course.

Yeah Jason, I was thinking of waiting for the RRM mattebox, but I dont know when its coming out, plus all my money is already going to the M2, so I need a cheap solution. How do you like your M2? Is it as sweet as I hear it is? Also, what about the backfocus, was that tough to get right when you first got it? Let me know!

What is the front thread size on the FD lenses?

So I found that the front thread is 52mm. I havent found a mattebox that is compatible with a 52mm thread, but I think I have seen some compatible with a 58mm thread. On B&H I found a stepup ring from 52mm to 58mm, but the ring itself doesnt seem to have outer threads, so how would I attach the mattebox? I'm sure these rings are intended for stepping up for filters or lenses, not matteboxes, any insight?

So this will work with any 35 mm adaptor? What do you guys use if you're not using a mattebox?

The reason that matte boxes are commonly designed to be mounted on rails is to eliminate the issue of mounting on various sized lenses. You also don't have to worry about bumping into something with the matte box and have it tear out your lens threads.

I assumed the mattebox was mounted by both the rails and the front thread...

The front threads are not 52mm on all lenses. I have a 80-200mm Nikkor with a 77mm thread. Plus, it's externally focusing (the lens moves in and out as it changes focus) -- the RRM is supposed to take that into account. For now, I'm just using lens hoods which work well. My real need for the matte box is for filters.
The M2 is sweet indeed. Still fighting for time to shoot more than test footage. Setting the backfocus was a bit of a challenge. Not hard to do, just a bit time consuming.

Where could I find a lens hood for the Canon FD lenses?

Just another thought. I have many manual Nikkors (52mm barrels) and I bought an adapter so I could use my formatt MB with them. Ususable, because with the weight from the mattebox, the focus barrels are forced and jam. I want to adapt my formatt for rail use, I still have to come with a good DIY solution, but I for now, am through of threading heavy stuff to my lenses...
