Is any one running FCP on an Apple xserve? Is it possible?

Yes it's possible. An Xserve is a Mac.
Not sure why you'd want to, though.

Why are you asking?

xserve / in a mobile rack mount box / with a ups / and a rackmount raid / for capturing straight from the camera.

The mere thought makes me giggle.

The only reason I'd be hesitant is that XServes use more power than regular Macs, I think. Depending on the model. Also, they are very loud, so you'd be introducing that issue into location sound.

If you go ahead and do it, please post pictures!

That might be a little overkill. What are capturing from? HVX? I think a Mac mini with a FW RAID would do the trick, plus it would save you a ton of money.

My original Idea was to have my whole edit system ( sans dual monitors and analog decks ) in one box so i could roll on set shoot and then plug it into my edit bay at home and then edit. I might be trying to kill an ant with a howitzer though.

a 12 in ibook with an external HD would do the same thing with dv. No extra monitor to take care of.
